Fifth Suspect Detained in Zondacrypto Exchange Fraud Investigation in Poland

A court in Katowice, Poland, has approved the pretrial detention of a fifth suspect in the ongoing investigation into the Zondacrypto exchange, which was formerly known as BitBay. The suspect, identified as Roman Ż., faces serious charges including membership in an organized criminal group and computer fraud related to the misappropriation of approximately 7.8 million złoty, or about $2 million, from client funds. This case has escalated into one of Europe’s largest crypto fraud investigations, with total client losses estimated at around 350 million złoty, equivalent to $94 million, and over 3,600 formal complaints filed by affected users.

Zondacrypto, which began operations as BitBay in 2014 and rebranded in 2021, was once one of Poland's leading digital asset exchanges, boasting over 1.3 million registered users. However, the platform halted trading in April 2026, leaving users unable to access their funds and prompting a formal investigation by the National Prosecutor’s Office in Katowice on April 17, 2026. The investigation has already led to the arrest of four other suspects, including Radosław Piesiewicz, the president of the Polish Olympic Committee, with charges ranging from asset misappropriation to money laundering.

The investigation is not limited to Poland, as prosecutors are collaborating with Estonian authorities and have extended the inquiry timeline to January 2027. In a significant development, investigators have managed to freeze approximately €4 million in a French bank account linked to the case. The political implications of the case, particularly the involvement of a high-profile Olympic Committee president, are likely to keep it in the public eye as discussions about regulatory frameworks for cryptocurrencies intensify in Poland and across the European Union.
