HSBC and Ant Digital Conduct AI Payment Trial Using Tokenized Deposits

HSBC and Ant Digital Technologies have successfully conducted a technical trial demonstrating the use of AI agents for autonomous payments using tokenized bank deposits. The test, held on October 9, 2026, utilized HSBC's Tokenised Deposit Service (TDS) in conjunction with Ant Digital's Anvita Flow network, operating on the Jovay Testnet, a Layer 2 blockchain environment.

During the trial, AI agents were able to locate digital services and execute micropayments, typically under $2, in real time. HSBC maintained control over the transactions through a risk-check interface, ensuring oversight while the AI agents performed the spending. This exercise was strictly technical, with no commercial applications or live customers involved.

HSBC's TDS, launched in Hong Kong in 2025, allows corporate deposits to be represented as on-chain digital records, facilitating 24/7 fund movement without introducing new public tokens. The partnership between HSBC and Ant Digital has been developing since at least 2023, with recent announcements of pilot programs for intra-UAE transactions and cross-border payments in US dollars.
