IMF Warns of Financial Risks in Growing Tokenized Markets

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has issued a warning regarding the potential financial risks associated with the growth of tokenized markets in its October 2026 Global Financial Stability Report. The report highlights that while tokenization offers benefits such as faster settlement times and reduced transaction costs, it may also exacerbate traditional financial issues like liquidity crises, fire sales, and systemic contagion as the market expands.

As of July 2026, the total outstanding value of tokenized real-world assets (RWAs), excluding stablecoins, reached approximately $65 billion, with fixed-income products, including tokenized bonds, accounting for about $48 billion. Tokenized equities represented a mere $2.3 billion, illustrating that the majority of tokenization activity has been concentrated in debt instruments rather than stocks. The report also noted that tokenized equities exhibit about 1.5 times the volatility of traditional equities, coupled with significantly lower liquidity, raising concerns for investors.

The IMF identified several barriers hindering the broader adoption of tokenized markets, including legal uncertainties regarding ownership claims, a lack of regulatory clarity, interoperability issues between different platforms, and limited access to safe assets for trade settlements. This report marks the IMF's third warning on the risks of tokenization in 2026, emphasizing that as these markets become more integrated with the traditional financial system, challenges in one area could lead to problems in another.
