Hong Kong Brokers Experience 13.5% Drop in Crypto Trading Commissions in H1 2026

In the first half of 2026, commission income from virtual asset trading at brokers in Hong Kong decreased by 13.5%, according to a recent review by the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC). Brokers earned HK$99.3 million in commissions during this period, down from HK$114.8 million in the second half of 2025, resulting in a loss of HK$15.5 million in revenue from crypto trading.

While the crypto sector faced challenges, the broader securities industry in Hong Kong reported a significant 21% increase in net profit, reaching HK$51.7 billion. This growth was supported by a 13% rise in combined net commission and interest income, which totaled HK$45.4 billion, encompassing various financial products including securities, futures, and options.

The decline in virtual asset commissions is notable as it contrasts sharply with the positive performance of other sectors within the securities industry. The SFC's findings suggest that this downturn may reflect a slowdown in crypto trading activity among Hong Kong brokers, potentially impacting investor confidence and market liquidity. As regulatory developments and market dynamics continue to evolve, stakeholders are expected to closely monitor the implications for the crypto sector.
