Bitcoin and Ether Liquidity Rebounds One Year After October 2025 Crash

One year after a significant crash in the cryptocurrency market, Bitcoin and Ether have successfully regained much of their lost liquidity, while altcoins continue to struggle. On October 10, 2025, the market experienced a dramatic downturn, with over $19 billion in leveraged positions liquidated in just 24 hours, primarily due to political developments including a 100% tariff announcement on Chinese imports by then-President Trump.

The aftermath of the crash saw Bitcoin's price drop between 12% and 17% from its all-time high of approximately $126,000. This led to a cascading effect of forced sales, exacerbating the decline in prices. By mid-December 2025, the open interest in altcoin derivatives plummeted from around $70 billion to approximately $30 billion, indicating a significant withdrawal of speculative capital from the market.

In contrast, Bitcoin and Ether have benefited from renewed interest, particularly from institutional investors and exchange-traded funds (ETFs). In October 2026, Bitcoin ETFs attracted $102.7 million in a single day, reflecting a strong institutional appetite. As of early October 2026, Bitcoin was trading between $80,000 and $87,000, still below its peak from the previous year.

The current landscape of the cryptocurrency market is characterized by a divergence in performance between major assets and altcoins. While Bitcoin and Ether are increasingly viewed as institutional assets, supported by steady demand and liquidity, altcoins are experiencing shorter rally periods and reduced open interest. This shift suggests a more cautious trading environment, where the potential for sustained rallies may be limited.
