Brazilian Police Seize $1.7 Million in Cryptocurrency from Phishing Ring

Brazilian authorities have seized approximately $1.7 million in cryptocurrency linked to a phishing ring during an operation conducted by the Civil Police of Santa Catarina on September 10, 2026. This operation, named Operação ClickFix, marks the largest recovery of self-custody digital assets by Brazilian police to date, with the seized funds consisting of Bitcoin, Ethereum, TRON, and Tether.

The seizure, valued at around R$8.78 million at the time, involved 13 separate transactions traced using blockchain analysis tools from Chainalysis. The assets have since been transferred to an institutional account at Foxbit, a Brazilian cryptocurrency exchange, where they are now held under state custody. In addition to the main seizure, reports indicate that approximately $218,000 in additional funds may also be involved, although details on this amount remain unclear.

The operation not only resulted in the cryptocurrency seizure but also led to two arrests and the confiscation of luxury vehicles, including a Corvette valued at over R$1.5 million. Courts have also ordered the freezing of bank accounts totaling up to R$93 million and the seizure of R$5 million in real estate as part of the investigation into the group's activities, which utilized social engineering techniques to compromise victims' devices and steal credentials.

The successful recovery of assets from self-custody wallets highlights the challenges law enforcement faces in such cases, as there is no intermediary to serve court orders. However, the operation demonstrates the capabilities of Brazilian investigators in utilizing blockchain technology to track and recover stolen assets, raising awareness about phishing schemes and prompting potential changes in how cryptocurrency users manage their digital assets.
