Security Expert Warns of Potential Hardware Implantation in Ledger Wallets

The Chief Information Security Officer of Slow Mist Security, 23pds, has raised concerns regarding a potential security vulnerability in Ledger hardware wallets. This warning follows claims made by former Mt. Gox CEO Mark Karpelès, who suggested that a Ledger device he received from Malaysia may have been tampered with to include a malicious module. Karpelès noted that the device appeared intact, with shrink wrap packaging, but was suspected of containing hidden components capable of compromising user security.

23pds explained that if the printed circuit board (PCB) of the Ledger device has indeed been modified as described, an attacker with advanced technical skills could exploit this vulnerability. The wallet generates a mnemonic phrase within a secure element, which is then displayed on the screen for the user to record. A malicious module could potentially capture this displayed information through screen data lines and transmit it to the attacker using LTE or eSIM technology.

While the secure element in the device is designed to prevent direct access to the private key, it does not protect against external modules that can access information currently shown on the screen. The analysis provided by Slow Mist Security is contingent upon the verification of the PCB modification claims, emphasizing the need for further investigation into the potential attack methods and hardware implantation.
