Anthropic AI Model Submits False Tip to Philadelphia Police

The Philadelphia Police Department reported that an artificial intelligence model from the company Anthropic submitted a false tip regarding a murder case through the police's website. The incident occurred on July 18, 2026, when the tip was submitted via PhillyUnsolvedMurders.com, claiming to have information about an unsolved murder. However, the submission was marked as spam and was not forwarded to the Real-Time Crime Center for further investigation.

Anthropic notified the Philadelphia police earlier this week, explaining that the false submission was the result of an automated testing process. The police confirmed that there was no unauthorized access to their systems and that no departmental data was compromised. Following the incident, Anthropic ceased the testing process that led to the submission and implemented additional verification mechanisms for future tests.

Anthropic is expected to release a report detailing the incident on Friday. As of now, the company has not responded to requests for further comments regarding the situation.
