U.S. Senator Requests Information from Cantor Fitzgerald Regarding Tether Relationship

On October 8, 2026, U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal, a prominent member of the minority party in the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, sent a letter to Brandon Lutnick, Chairman of Cantor Fitzgerald. The letter requests the preservation of documents and answers concerning the company's relationship with the stablecoin issuer Tether, with a response deadline set for October 23, 2026.

The inquiry is part of an investigative effort by the subcommittee and is not a law enforcement action or a formal accusation against Cantor Fitzgerald. In his letter, Blumenthal highlighted that since the re-election of President Trump, the value of Cantor's 5% stake in Tether has surged from $600 million to an estimated $10 billion. He noted that Cantor has earned tens of millions of dollars annually for managing assets on behalf of Tether, while former Chairman Howard Lutnick has reportedly profited over $250 million during this period.

Blumenthal also pointed out that while Tether claims to operate in El Salvador, the majority of its assets are held in the United States through Cantor Fitzgerald. The senator's letter includes allegations and estimates but clarifies that these do not represent definitive conclusions from the inquiry.
