Starknet Considers Transition to Independent Layer 1 Blockchain

Starknet, a prominent scaling network for Ethereum, is contemplating a significant shift from its current layer 2 status to an independent layer 1 blockchain. This announcement was made on October 8, 2026, and has already led to a notable rally in its native token, STRK, which reached a nine-month high, climbing to approximately $0.07 to $0.073.

The motivation behind this potential transition is centered on the need for quantum resistance. StarkWare's CEO, Eli Ben-Sasson, emphasized at the Token2049 conference that the project aims to achieve full quantum resistance by 2027, ahead of Ethereum's projected timeline of 2029. By establishing its own blockchain, Starknet would gain control over its consensus mechanism and security model, allowing it to implement necessary cryptographic upgrades without relying on Ethereum's schedule.

The market reacted swiftly to the news, with STRK experiencing gains between 19% and 40% from October 8 to 9. Additionally, futures open interest for STRK surged by over 50%, indicating increased speculative trading. On-chain activity also saw a boost, with daily trading on Starknet's decentralized exchanges reaching approximately $33.7 million and network fees hitting a seven-day high of around $13,685 on October 8.

While the proposal is still under consideration and requires governance approval, the implications of Starknet's potential independence could reshape the layer 2 landscape and challenge the existing dynamics within the Ethereum ecosystem. Stakeholders are now watching closely for any formal governance proposals and the technical designs necessary for such a transition.
