Revenue Accounting Discrepancies Between OpenAI and Anthropic Raise Investor Concerns

A report by Bloomberg highlights significant discrepancies in revenue accounting practices between OpenAI and Anthropic, complicating direct comparisons of their financial performance. Anthropic includes total sales from cloud service partners such as Amazon in its revenue figures, while OpenAI reports only its net income share from partners like Microsoft. This lack of standardized financial statements from both companies poses challenges for investors attempting to gauge their true business scale.

Insiders indicate that OpenAI anticipates its actual revenue for the full year 2026 to be approximately $35 billion, which is notably half of its year-end target of $70 billion in annualized revenue. In contrast, documents reviewed by Bloomberg reveal that Anthropic's actual revenue for 2025 stands at around $4.6 billion, despite its disclosed annualized revenue exceeding $9 billion.

Analysts caution that annualized revenue figures are often derived from short-term performance or contract values and should not be directly equated with confirmed revenue for an entire fiscal year. This distinction is crucial for investors as they navigate the complexities of evaluating the financial health of these prominent players in the artificial intelligence sector.
