XRP Ledger Reveals Critical Bug That Could Have Exceeded Token Supply Limit

The XRP Ledger has identified a significant arithmetic flaw that could have allowed the creation of XRP tokens beyond its established cap of 100 billion. This vulnerability was present in versions 3.4.0 and earlier of the xrpld software and was patched in an emergency update released on September 25, 2026. The issue was disclosed publicly on October 9, 2026, with investigators confirming that there is no evidence the bug was exploited on the public network.

The flaw involved a 64-bit integer used to calculate XRP amounts during transactions that pulled from multiple offers on the order book. If the total exceeded the integer's maximum capacity, it would wrap around, resulting in a misleadingly low number. An attacker could have exploited this to spend non-existent XRP, creating an inflated supply without detection. The cost to execute such an attack was relatively low, requiring only a few hundred XRP in reserves and fees, with the potential to mint amounts exceeding the total supply in a single transaction.

The vulnerability was reported by researcher Cayden Liao through the XRPL Bug Bounty program, and RippleX, the development arm of Ripple, confirmed the issue. Following the report, the development team quickly reproduced the attack on a standalone server, validating the potential for excess XRP to be spent. The decision to bypass the usual amendment process for the patch highlights the urgency of the situation, as it allowed for immediate deployment without waiting for validator voting. This has raised concerns about the trust placed in the core development team and the need for node operators to upgrade their software promptly to avoid security risks.
