Why Is Bitcoin Down Today: Bitcoin at $83,253 After $1.19…
The myth in the search bar is that Bitcoin is down today. On the Friday clock saved here, it is not. CoinGecko's simple price at 12:13:52 UTC on 9 October 2026 was $83,253, up 1.09 percent over 24 hours, on a market cap of $1.673 trillion. The loss the query is still pricing was Thursday. Binance BTCUSDT printed a low of $80,393.56 in the hour that opened at 17:00 UTC on 8 October. CoinDesk's early-Friday account put 24-hour crypto liquidations at $1.19 billion, more than $1 billion from longs, with ether at $356 million and bitcoin at $298 million. Farside's US spot bitcoin ETFs lost $729.0 million over 7 and 8 October. That is 0.0436 percent of the market cap. It did not size the drop from the 5 October CoinGecko mark of $86,489.73 to that Binance low. Three Binance spot hours did more of the work than the redemption file.
Key facts
- CoinGecko, 9 October 2026: simple price $83,253 at 12:13:52 UTC, up 1.09 percent, market cap $1,673,123,042,269, 24-hour volume $40.40 billion. The market-chart point at 12:13:10 UTC is $83,259.37. Source: CoinGecko.
- Binance BTCUSDT, same pull: last $83,290.01, up 1.070 percent from $82,408.00, low $80,393.56, high $83,528.98, quote turnover $1.584 billion. The low is the 17:00 UTC hour on 8 October. Source: Binance public data, saved 9 October 2026.
- CoinDesk early Friday: $1.19 billion liquidated in 24 hours, more than $1 billion from longs. Ether $356 million, bitcoin $298 million, Solana $71 million, XRP $34 million. Largest single wipeout about $20 million of ether on Hyperliquid. Source: CoinDesk.
- CoinDesk later that morning, citing CoinGlass: rolling 24-hour liquidations $1.09 billion, longs $931 million. Ether $345 million, bitcoin $266 million. Source: CoinDesk.
- Farside, page dated 9 October 2026: bitcoin ETF outflow $484.9 million on 7 October and $244.1 million on 8 October. Friday is still dashes, not a published flow. Two-day sum $729.0 million. Source: Farside.
- Binance BTCUSDT perpetual, same morning: open interest 91,938.778 BTC, about $7.658 billion at a mark of $83,289.73. Last funding 0.003145 percent per eight hours, 3.44 percent annualized. CoinGecko global: bitcoin dominance 59.76 percent, total crypto market cap $2.793 trillion, down 3.31 percent in 24 hours.
- CoinDesk, 8-9 October: MARA moved about 996 BTC ($81.13 million) to a Galaxy Digital address, sale not confirmed. US-linked wallets moved 12,267 BTC, about $1.01 billion, from a Bitfinex seizure wallet to unlabeled addresses, with no exchange deposit. Sources: MARA and the wallets.
What just happened, and why the obvious reading is wrong
The obvious reading is a Friday crash through $80,000. At 12:13 UTC CoinGecko was $83,253 and Binance's last trade was $83,290.01, both up a little more than 1 percent on the day. The break was the 15:00 to 17:00 UTC window on Thursday 8 October, afternoon in New York.
Binance's 15:00 UTC hour fell to $80,914.23 on $244.6 million of quote turnover. The next hour's low was $80,800.95 on $160.3 million. The 17:00 UTC hour made the low, $80,393.56, and closed at $80,748.46 on $128.3 million. Three hours, $533.3 million of Binance spot quote volume: 33.7 percent of the $1.584 billion on the 24-hour ticker, and 44.8 percent of the $1.19 billion cross-venue liquidation. The forced derivatives flow was larger than the spot turnover under it.
Daily marks hide that low. The 9 October midnight print is $81,685.89, and the chart below does not include $80,393.56. Calling $83,253 Thursday's close would be the wrong clock. From the 5 October mark of $86,489.73 to this spot is 3.74 percent, not the "about 4 percent" CoinDesk used when bitcoin was still near $82,500. Global crypto market cap was down 3.31 percent over 24 hours while bitcoin itself was up. The liquidation window moved from $1.19 billion early Friday to CoinGlass's later $1.09 billion. Ether led both. CoinDesk put ether's hit at about six times bitcoin's per dollar of market value.
Who is exposed
The perpetual book is not only bitcoin. Ether was $356 million of the $1.19 billion, bitcoin $298 million, and Hyperliquid carried the largest single print, about $20 million of ether. Shorts then paid for part of the bounce: about 78 percent of roughly $25 million liquidated over four hours, on CoinDesk's count, were bets on a further decline.
The second book is the US spot bitcoin ETF. Farside's finished totals are minus $484.9 million on 7 October and minus $244.1 million on 8 October, $729.0 million out. IBIT led Wednesday at minus $207.7 million. FBTC led Thursday at minus $197.1 million. Over the two days FBTC is $302.2 million out, IBIT $213.2 million, and ARKB $122.0 million. FinanceFeeds recorded Thursday's $244.1 million. @BitcoinNewsCom, at 12:05 UTC on 9 October, posted the same pair, "$244.1 million in net outflows Thursday" and "$729 million" over two sessions, and named Fidelity's FBTC as Thursday's lead seller. Link: the post.
Spread over a day, $729.0 million is 0.0436 percent of the market cap and $1.19 billion is 0.0711 percent. From $86,489.73 to $80,393.56 is $6,096, or 7.05 percent. The percentage is the break. The ETF dollar total is not. Listed holders were moving coins anyway. CoinDesk said MARA sent about 996 BTC, $81.13 million, to an address Lookonchain tied to Galaxy Digital, and the copy does not confirm a sale. Holdings fell from 53,822 BTC on 26 February to 35,577 on 7 August. CoinDesk put the shares 2 percent higher in Friday premarket, at $10. That is not a cash close.
The government's book moved the same day. CoinDesk, citing Arkham, said 12,267 BTC, about $1.01 billion, left a Bitfinex seizure wallet for new unlabeled addresses, with no exchange deposit. A day earlier, about 3,200 BTC, roughly $264 million, and $119 million of USDT hit Coinbase Prime addresses. Prime also custodies, so a deposit is not a sale. FinanceFeeds has that wallet move. A reserve marked as locked supply still changed addresses into the liquidation.
What the tape actually shows
The table is the Thursday break against the Friday spot. Daily marks, Binance hours, and the two liquidation windows are not the same object.
| Tape | Versus the $83,253 spot | Source and clock | |
|---|---|---|---|
| CoinGecko spot | $83,253 | the reference | Simple price, 9 October 2026, 12:13:52 UTC |
| Series mark | $83,259.37 | about $6 above the spot | CoinGecko market chart, 12:13:10 UTC |
| 5 October mark | $86,489.73 | spot is 3.74 percent under it | CoinGecko, 00:00 UTC |
| 9 October midnight | $81,685.89 | 1.88 percent under the spot | CoinGecko, 00:00 UTC |
| Binance hour low | $80,393.56 | 3.43 percent under the spot | BTCUSDT, hour opened 17:00 UTC, 8 October |
| Early liquidations | $1.19 billion | 0.0711 percent of market cap | CoinDesk, early 9 October |
| Later liquidations | $1.09 billion | longs $931 million | CoinDesk citing CoinGlass |
| Two-day ETF flow | minus $729.0 million | 0.0436 percent of market cap | Farside, 7 and 8 October |
| 30-day mean | $81,923.99 | 1.60 percent under the spot | 30 midnight marks, 10 September to 9 October |
Funding did not lead the break. At 16:00 UTC on 8 October, mark $81,012.61, Binance funding was 0.003445 percent, 3.77 percent annualized at three intervals a day. Friday's last rate was 0.003145 percent, 3.44 percent annualized, at a mark of $83,289.73. CoinDesk, citing Coinalyze, still had aggregate funding near 5 percent and open interest down 1.9 percent to $27.1 billion. Binance's 91,938.778 BTC is about $7.658 billion of that. The rebound is not a pile of new Binance leverage. Brent, in the same CoinDesk notes, was around $103, about 1 percent lower on the day. Nasdaq 100 futures were up 0.83 percent since midnight, S&P 500 futures 0.44 percent. Those are futures. At 12:13 UTC Friday's cash session had not opened. Thursday 8 October is the last cash close.
What officials and companies have said
CoinDesk places the president's post at 12:17 p.m. ET on Thursday, 16:17 UTC, inside the hour before Binance printed $80,393.56. On their account, selling ran out near $80,300 after it.
"We will not be attacking Iran at any time prior to the Midterm Elections to be held in the United States on November 3rd," Trump said in a Truth Social post, published at 12:17 p.m. ET.
Donald Trump, president, Truth Social, 8 October 2026, as reported by CoinDesk.
He called the talks "productive" and said the blockade stays "in full force and effect." That is a date, not a peace. Axios, cited in the same CoinDesk piece, had reported on 7 October that the Pentagon told Central Command to prepare for renewed combat in Iran. Fed minutes, in which most officials still expected another hike before year-end, were a second weight, not the hour. A separate FinanceFeeds piece took that year-end question. The path below is 30 days, and it does not reuse those levels.
Vikram Subburaj, CEO of Giottus, told CoinDesk to watch $81,000, to wait on leverage until bitcoin reclaimed $83,300 and then $85,500 with stronger ETF inflows, and that a break under $81,000 pointed toward $77,200. The spot here is still short of $83,300. Purvang Mashru, lead analyst at BitDelta India, told CoinDesk a break under $80,316 would raise the downside. The Binance low, $80,393.56, sits just above that line.
"At the peak of its decline on Thursday, Bitcoin fell to $80.4K, touching its lowest level in the past three weeks and its 50-day moving average, where the balance shifted in favour of buyers," Alex Kuptsikevich, the chief market analyst at FxPro, said in an email to CoinDesk.
Alex Kuptsikevich, chief market analyst, FxPro, email to CoinDesk, 9 October 2026.
The 50-day average is his claim, not a line from this file. CoinDesk's daybook put a 50-week average near $78,000. The bear below lands near that zone without copying it. MARA has not confirmed a sale. Farside's Friday row is dashes, so a printed 0.0 is an empty sum, not a flat day. Yehuda Lindell, Coinbase's top cryptographer, called Justin Drake's "bunker mode" warning "FUD." FinanceFeeds has that warning.
The reserve rule and the redemption desk
No new statute passed on Thursday. The tension is a rule that says the coins should not be sold, next to a tape that traded as if supply had moved. CoinDesk noted a March 2025 executive order directing forfeited bitcoin into a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, not onto the market. Arkham's figure in that piece still has the government at about $25.5 billion of crypto. Moving 12,267 BTC to unlabeled wallets can be custody housekeeping and still look like an offer to a book that is being liquidated. The order forbids a sale. It does not stop the market from pricing the next hop. Coinbase Prime's earlier deposits have the same ambiguity. Nobody in the fetched accounts called Thursday's move a sale.
The regulated flow that did print is the redemption. Two sessions paid out, $484.9 million then $244.1 million. IBIT was the large Wednesday cell. Fidelity's FBTC, $197.1 million, was the large Thursday cell. That is a change in who met redemptions, not a new law. Friday's row was still blank at this download. UK sanctions noted on CoinDesk's Friday feed are a compliance item for the named venues. They are not the 17:00 UTC low.
Bull, base, and bear for the next 30 days
The horizon is 8 November 2026, 30 days from this print. The anchor is $83,253. The bull adds the bounce already earned. The base is the 30-day average the price just left. The bear repeats Thursday's percentage. None of the three is a target from an older note.
$83,253 minus $80,393.56 is $2,859.44. Add the 5 October mark and the bull is $89,349.17, 7.32 percent above the spot, and above the 30-day high midnight mark of $86,596.74 on 22 September. It needs the no-strike line through 3 November, a week of positive Farside totals, and no revisit of $80,393.56.
The base is the average of those 30 midnight marks, $81,923.99, 1.60 percent under the spot. The bounce fades, outflows slow, and the low holds. The midnight print, $81,685.89, is already close.
The bear reapplies the decline: $80,393.56 divided by $86,489.73, times $83,253, is $77,384.96, another 7.05 percent. It needs a second break, another liquidation window near $1.19 billion, and ETF outflows that stay large. The 16 September mark in this file is $75,590.24, so this bear does not by itself take out the low already saved.
| Case | 8 November 2026 | Versus $83,253 | What has to be true |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bull | $89,349.17 | plus 7.32 percent | $86,489.73 plus the $2,859.44 bounce. The pledge holds through 3 November. Farside is positive for a week. $80,393.56 is not revisited. |
| Base | $81,923.99 | minus 1.60 percent | Mean of 30 midnight marks, 10 September to 9 October. The bounce fades, outflows slow, and the Binance low holds. |
| Bear | $77,384.96 | minus 7.05 percent | $83,253 times $80,393.56 / $86,489.73. The low breaks, liquidations approach another $1.19 billion, and ETF outflows stay in the two-day range. |
What happens next
By Monday 12 October, Farside should have Friday 9 October filled in. The bounce to $83,253 happened with that cell blank, so price left $81,685.89 without a new creation. If Friday is another outflow larger than $244.1 million, the base at $81,923.99 is the path the redemption desk is voting for. A positive Friday print is the first half of the inflow week the bull needs. The dollars stay small next to the cap. The sign is the information.
On 3 November, the date in Trump's sentence, the bull at $89,349.17 stays alive only if the pledge is still policy and spot has not printed under $80,393.56 again. A new oil spike, or a break of that low, hands the path to the bear. On 8 November the check is the mark itself. Nearer $89,349 than $81,924 is the bull. Back at the 30-day mean is the base. Through $77,385 is the bear. A daily mark under $80,393.56 retires the bull that day, because the $2,859.44 added to 5 October would be a round trip.
This is not financial advice.
Frequently asked questions
Why is bitcoin down today?
It is not down on the Friday print saved here. CoinGecko showed $83,253 at 12:13:52 UTC on 9 October 2026, up 1.09 percent over 24 hours. The drop people are searching was Thursday, when Binance BTCUSDT hit $80,393.56 and CoinDesk put 24-hour crypto liquidations at $1.19 billion. Most of that was longs, and ether was a larger share than bitcoin. The Friday tape is a bounce, not a new break.
How much was liquidated, and where?
CoinDesk's early Friday total was $1.19 billion over 24 hours, more than $1 billion from longs. Ether was $356 million, bitcoin $298 million, Solana $71 million, and XRP $34 million. The largest single position was about $20 million of ether on Hyperliquid. A later CoinDesk note, citing CoinGlass, had the rolling total at $1.09 billion as the window moved. Both figures are in fetched pages. They are not the same hour.
Did bitcoin ETF outflows cause the drop?
They added supply, and they did not size it. Farside recorded outflows of $484.9 million on 7 October and $244.1 million on 8 October, $729.0 million combined. That is 0.0436 percent of bitcoin's $1.673 trillion market cap. The price move from the 5 October mark to the Binance low was 7.05 percent. Friday's Farside row was still blank at this download. Treat a printed 0.0 on that row as missing, not as a flat day.
What did Trump say about Iran?
CoinDesk quoted a Truth Social post at 12:17 p.m. ET on Thursday. Trump said the United States would not attack Iran before the midterm elections on 3 November, and that the blockade stays in force. CoinDesk put the post next to a low near $80,300 and a rebound. The spot used here, later that morning UTC, is $83,253. The sentence sets a date. It does not end the oil risk that showed up in Brent near $103.
What are the 30-day bull, base, and bear?
From $83,253, the bull is $89,349.17, the 5 October CoinGecko mark plus the $2,859.44 bounce off $80,393.56. The base is $81,923.99, the average of 30 midnight marks from 10 September to 9 October. The bear is $77,384.96, the Thursday percentage drop applied again. The horizon is 8 November 2026. A new low under $80,393.56 retires the bull. These are paths from this file, not a promise.
Is $83,253 a daily close?
No. It is CoinGecko's simple price at 12:13:52 UTC on Friday 9 October 2026. The midnight mark that day was $81,685.89, and the market-chart point at 12:13:10 UTC was $83,259.37. Binance's 24-hour ticker showed a last of $83,290.01. Crypto trades through the US cash close. None of these prints is an equity close, and Friday's cash session had not opened at 12:13 UTC.
