Mastercard CEO Highlights Stablecoins' Role in Cross-Border Payments

Mastercard CEO Michael Miebach has identified cross-border payments as the primary area where stablecoins are making significant strides. In an interview with Bloomberg on October 9, 2026, Miebach pointed out that traditional methods of sending money internationally often involve lengthy settlement times and opaque fees, issues that stablecoins are well-positioned to address.

Stablecoins, which are cryptocurrency tokens typically pegged to stable assets like the US dollar, can facilitate near-instant transactions by bypassing the traditional banking system. This capability allows businesses to access their funds more quickly, enabling them to utilize working capital without delays caused by interbank processing.

Mastercard has been actively integrating stablecoins into its operations, supporting various tokens such as USDC, Paxos, and RLUSD across multiple blockchain networks. A key development in this strategy was the acquisition of BVNK, a digital asset infrastructure provider, in a deal valued at up to $1.8 billion. This acquisition aims to enhance the lifecycle management of stablecoin transactions, including holding, moving, and converting digital assets.

Miebach emphasized that the integration of stablecoins is intended to complement Mastercard's existing payment solutions rather than replace traditional card payments. He also assured that consumer protections akin to those associated with card transactions will be maintained, aligning with Mastercard's commitment to regulatory compliance as the landscape for stablecoins evolves.
