Ledger Investigates Potential Tampering of Devices Sold in Malaysia

Ledger, a prominent hardware wallet manufacturer, has initiated an investigation following reports of tampered devices sold through a Southeast Asian reseller, CryptoBilis, based in Malaysia. On October 9, 2026, former Mt. Gox CEO Mark Karpelès shared images of a Ledger device that allegedly contained a hidden implant designed to compromise user security. Karpelès claimed that the device included LTE components, an antenna, an eSIM, and a microcontroller concealed within the screen padding, potentially allowing unauthorized access to sensitive information such as seed phrases.

In response to these alarming findings, Ledger has instructed CryptoBilis to halt all sales and advised customers who purchased devices from this reseller not to initialize them. Initializing a hardware wallet generates a new seed phrase, which, if compromised, could lead to significant financial losses. Estimates suggest that users may have incurred losses exceeding $86 million across various cryptocurrencies, although these figures have not been independently verified.

This incident is not isolated; earlier in 2026, similar reports of hardware implants in Ledger devices surfaced in Thailand, indicating a troubling trend within Southeast Asian resale markets. While Ledger maintains that the core product remains secure, the situation highlights the risks associated with purchasing hardware wallets from unauthorized channels. Users are encouraged to buy directly from Ledger's official outlets and to follow the company's guidelines for checking device integrity. The outcome of Ledger's investigation will be crucial in determining the extent of the issue and restoring customer trust.
