Grayscale Research Head: BTC's Best Trading Days Are Hard to Predict, Timing the Market May Carry High Opportunity Cost

PANews, October 6 – Grayscale's Head of Research Zach Pandl wrote that Bitcoin has delivered a cumulative return of roughly 225% over the past three years, compared with about 109% for the Nasdaq over the same period, but BTC's gains are highly concentrated in a small number of trading days. Data shows that if the five best-performing trading days for BTC over the past three years are excluded, its cumulative return would fall from 225% to 95%; excluding the best 10 days would bring it down to 27%, and excluding the best 15 days would turn it into a loss of 11%. By comparison, the Nasdaq would still show a cumulative return of 21% after excluding its best 15 days.

Pandl noted that for a high-return, high-volatility asset like Bitcoin, staying out of the market itself carries an opportunity cost. Over the past three years, less than 0.5% of trading days accounted for gains large enough to cut BTC's cumulative return by more than half, and BTC's best trading days cannot be reliably predicted. Therefore, for investors seeking long-term capital appreciation, rather than trying to time the market, it is better to maintain continuous, long-term BTC exposure.
