Kalshi Traders Anticipate Job Growth in September

Traders on the prediction market platform Kalshi are forecasting that the United States added over 90,000 jobs in September 2026. With the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) set to release its nonfarm payrolls report on October 2, contracts on Kalshi indicate a 56% probability that job additions will exceed this threshold. The current price for the 'Above 90,000' contract stands at 60 cents, reflecting traders' confidence in this prediction.

Kalshi, which is regulated by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), allows participants to buy and sell contracts based on official government data releases. In addition to the 90,000 threshold, traders can also wager on whether job additions will surpass 100,000 or 125,000. Trading volume for these contracts has reached approximately $119,000, with economist forecasts suggesting job additions could range from 84,000 to 95,000, placing the 90,000 mark at the center of expectations.

The upcoming jobs report is particularly significant for the Federal Reserve, as it could influence monetary policy decisions. A report showing job growth above 90,000 but below August's figure of 162,000 might support a narrative of gradual economic normalization. Conversely, if the report indicates job growth below 84,000, it could lead to expectations of more aggressive interest rate cuts. A stronger-than-expected report, exceeding 125,000 jobs, could delay anticipated rate cuts further. The BLS report will be released at 8:30 a.m. ET on October 2.
