Mastercard Just Made Alipay+, GCash, and TenPay Wallets…

Mastercard launched Wallet Pay on 9 September, a portfolio of services that lets digital wallet providers plug into the card network's global acceptance infrastructure across contactless, QR code, and online payments. The product connects 12 wallet providers, including Alipay+ partner wallets, GCash, Mercado Pago, and TenPay Global, to Mastercard's rails, with its money-movement pillar supporting fast transfers across more than 200 countries and 150 currencies.

How Wallet Pay Works Across Contactless, QR, and Online

Wallet Pay is not a single product, but a suite of five cloud-based capabilities, and wallet providers can issue Mastercard-branded credit, debit, or prepaid cards directly inside their apps. Merchants can accept those wallet payments in-store through NFC tap or QR code, and online through e-commerce integrations. The system also supports cross-border fund transfers between cards, wallets, and bank accounts, and it offers financial tools aimed at unbanked and underbanked populations. The design requires minimal infrastructure changes from wallet providers. Rather than building bilateral acceptance agreements with merchants in every new country, a wallet provider connects once to Mastercard's network and inherits acceptance at hundreds of millions of merchant locations. For the consumer, a GCash user in Manila or a KakaoPay user in Seoul can tap to pay at a terminal in Paris without downloading a new app or converting currency manually.

Alipay+ Anchors the Launch With Six Wallet Partners

The launch partners split into two groups. The Alipay+ ecosystem contributes six wallets: AlipayHK (Hong Kong), Clip (Mexico), GCash (Philippines), KakaoPay (South Korea), TNG eWallet (Malaysia), and TrueMoney (Thailand). The remaining partners are Axian, CRED, DaviPlata, Mercado Pago, MTN, and TenPay Global, giving the network footholds across Latin America, Africa, South Asia, and Southeast Asia.Peng Yang, CEO of Ant International, the company behind Alipay+, said in the press release that "Together with Mastercard and partners, Ant International looks forward to expanding global interoperability and mobile agentic commerce for people and businesses everywhere to connect and thrive."Alipay+ already connects more than 50 mobile payment partners to roughly 150 million global merchants; Wallet Pay extends that reach further by layering Mastercard's card-based acceptance on top.Ren-Ren Reyes, President and CEO of G-Xchange, the company that operates GCash, noted that "Mastercard's trusted infrastructure lets us scale responsibly." Adolfo Babatz, CEO of Mexican fintech Clip, added that the company "launched with full interoperability from day one" through the Wallet Pay and Alipay+ combination.

The Reach: 3.7 Billion Credentials and a 4.3 Billion User Base

The numbers behind the launch explain why Mastercard is positioning itself as plumbing rather than a competitor to wallets. Digital wallets already serve an estimated 4.3 billion users worldwide, a figure Mastercard cited in its investor newsroom release, with projections reaching 6 billion by 2030. Mastercard's own credential base stands at 3.7 billion. Wallet Pay is the bridge between the two: it turns wallet users who were previously locked inside national payment ecosystems into participants in Mastercard's global network.Jorn Lambert, Mastercard's Chief Product Officer, framed the strategic logic plainly: "Wallets are gateways to the digital economy and launchpads for broader financial services." That phrasing is telling. Mastercard is not building its own wallet; it is making itself the layer that every wallet needs in order to work outside its home market.

Mastercard's Bet: Become the Network Under the Wallets

The strategic question is whether Wallet Pay turns Mastercard from a card network that wallets were supposed to disintermediate into the interoperability layer that those wallets cannot do without.Digital wallets were built to replace cards at the point of sale. In their home markets, many have succeeded: GCash reports more than 81 million active users in a country of roughly 115 million people, making it the dominant mobile payments app in the Philippines. But wallets are national products, and card networks are global ones.Wallet Pay exploits that asymmetry, as a wallet provider that wants its users to spend in 200 countries has two options: negotiate acceptance country by country, or connect to a network that already has it. Mastercard is offering the second path, and the price of admission is running on Mastercard rails. Every cross-border tap, every QR scan at a foreign merchant, every online checkout in a new currency generates interchange revenue that flows back through Mastercard's settlement system. The early traction is real. AlipayHK has already launched NFC contactless capabilities through the integration. Clip's Mi Clip wallet in Mexico went live with cross-border interoperability built in from launch. If adoption continues at this pace, Wallet Pay could do for digital wallets what acceptance networks did for plastic cards in the 1990s: make them useful everywhere instead of just at home. The next milestone is whether wallet providers beyond the initial 12 sign on. Visa announced a link-and-pay integration with GCash in August 2026, so the two networks are competing for wallet partnerships. But Wallet Pay's scope is broader, bundling card issuance, NFC, QR, e-commerce, and cross-border transfers into a single suite rather than individual bilateral integrations. In payments infrastructure, the first network to achieve critical mass in wallet interoperability tends to keep it.
