Tether's Dominance in Asia-Pacific Stablecoin Payments Declines to 91%
Tether's USDT continues to lead the stablecoin payments sector in the Asia-Pacific region, but its dominance has decreased from 98% in early 2025 to 91% as of July 2026. This decline is attributed to a gradual shift towards compliance-focused stablecoins, with Ripple's RLUSD emerging as a notable competitor, according to a report published by CoinDesk Research on September 15, 2026.
The report highlights that the Asia-Pacific region accounted for 51.2% of the global identified stablecoin payment volume, totaling $30.9 billion across 426 corridors in 28 countries. Business-to-business transactions represented 37.1% of this payment volume in the first half of 2026, indicating a growing interest in stablecoins for corporate use.
The shift in market dynamics suggests that institutions are increasingly prioritizing stablecoins that emphasize compliance and regulatory approval over those that merely offer liquidity. RLUSD, which has received regulatory clearance in Japan as a new electronic payment instrument, is being distributed through SBI VC Trade, showcasing a potential model for future stablecoins in the region.
