U.S. Bank Executes First Live Cross-Border Payment Using…
U.S. Bank has completed its first live cross-border payment using USBDC, its proprietary U.S. dollar-backed stablecoin, marking a significant step in the lender's push to bring blockchain-based settlement into conventional banking infrastructure. The live pilot transferred value between U.S. Bank entities in North America and Europe using the public Stellar blockchain. The transaction was an internal cross-border payment rather than a customer transfer, but it moved USBDC onchain while remaining connected to the bank's existing finance, compliance, risk and operational infrastructure.U.S. Bank, a subsidiary of U.S. Bancorp, is the fifth-largest commercial bank in the United States and serves approximately 15 million clients globally. The bank first disclosed its work with Stellar and PwC on custom stablecoin issuance in 2025.
USBDC Tests Freezing and Clawback Controls
The latest transaction tested more than simply transferring tokens between two blockchain addresses. U.S. Bank used the pilot to evaluate USBDC minting and redemption alongside freezing and clawback functionality. Those controls address one of the central challenges banks face when deploying money on public blockchains. Conventional cryptocurrency transactions generally cannot be reversed by a financial institution once finalized. Regulated banks, however, must maintain mechanisms for compliance, fraud prevention and responding to legal orders.Stellar supports issuer-level asset controls that can allow a regulated institution to freeze assets or restrict their movement. U.S. Bank incorporated those capabilities into its internally developed Digital Asset Platform, which provides the infrastructure for issuing, managing and transferring tokenized assets. Stellar says its network typically settles transactions within three to five seconds and has maintained 99.99% uptime over a decade. The network also offers transaction costs below one U.S. cent, potentially allowing banks to move tokenized money continuously rather than depending exclusively on conventional banking hours.Banks Push Stablecoins Into Payments
USBDC remains a pilot rather than a broadly available commercial stablecoin. U.S. Bank has not announced that retail or institutional customers can purchase and freely transfer USBDC, nor has it provided a timeline for such a launch. Instead, the bank is evaluating applications including cross-border treasury operations, liquidity management and collateral mobility. Those uses could become particularly important for multinational companies that currently manage liquidity across multiple jurisdictions, currencies and banking hours.A bank-issued token could allow value to move continuously while remaining a direct liability within regulated banking infrastructure. The initiative comes as U.S. banks accelerate stablecoin development following greater regulatory clarity around dollar-backed digital assets. Reuters reported that Goldman Sachs, Bank of America, Citigroup and Wells Fargo are among institutions involved in plans for a separate dollar-pegged cryptocurrency initiative targeted for the first half of 2027. U.S. Bank is taking a different route by building its own token and testing it directly on a public blockchain. The choice of Stellar is also significant. Rather than developing a private blockchain accessible only to participating banks, U.S. Bank is experimenting with regulated financial instruments on open blockchain infrastructure while adding controls at the asset and institutional layers. That creates a different model from both conventional bank payment networks and permissionless stablecoins. The transaction does not yet demonstrate commercial adoption of USBDC. It does demonstrate that U.S. Bank can mint its own dollar-backed asset, transfer it internationally over a public blockchain, redeem it and retain mechanisms to freeze or claw back tokens when necessary. The next test is whether those capabilities move beyond intra-bank pilots. If U.S. Bank ultimately extends USBDC to corporate clients, the experiment could turn Stellar from a testing environment into infrastructure supporting 24/7 treasury and cross-border payments for one of America's largest banks.Source: FinanceFeeds
