Blockchain Association CEO Summer Mersinger to Depart Amid Legislative Setback
Summer Mersinger will step down as CEO of the Blockchain Association on October 16, 2026, following a significant legislative defeat in the U.S. Senate. The Senate recently blocked the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, a bill aimed at establishing a regulatory framework for the cryptocurrency industry, with a narrow 49-50 vote on September 15, 2026. Mersinger, who joined the association in June 2025, will continue to serve as an advisor until the end of the year, while Kristin Smith, the association's founding member and current board president, will assume the role of interim CEO starting October 17, 2026.
Mersinger's tenure was marked by extensive engagement with lawmakers, including over 300 meetings with congressional and agency staff and the organization of seven member fly-ins in 2026. Her background as a former commissioner at the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) lent credibility to the association's advocacy efforts, particularly in arguing for the regulation of digital assets under the CFTC rather than the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
Smith's return to the leadership role indicates a focus on maintaining continuity and leveraging institutional knowledge during this transitional period. However, her dual responsibilities as interim CEO of the Blockchain Association and leader of the Solana Policy Institute raise questions about the future direction of both organizations and their roles within the broader cryptocurrency advocacy landscape. The Blockchain Association is currently seeking a permanent CEO to navigate the evolving regulatory environment and enhance its influence in Washington, D.C.
