US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent Issues Challenge to Investors on Yen Trading
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recently addressed an audience at Southern Methodist University, boldly challenging investors to short the Japanese yen. He claimed to possess 'asymmetric information' regarding Japanese monetary policy, inviting traders to take positions against him in the currency market. This declaration follows a significant intervention by the US and Japan aimed at stabilizing the yen, which had seen a dramatic decline against the US dollar.
In late July, the US conducted its first yen-buying intervention since 1998, collaborating with Japan to support the currency after the USD/JPY exchange rate surged to nearly 164. Japan contributed a substantial $96.4 billion to this effort, resulting in a notable recovery of the yen, which has since appreciated approximately seven percent to around 153 against the dollar.
Bessent's remarks are particularly relevant to the yen carry trade, a popular strategy where investors borrow in yen at low interest rates and invest in higher-yielding currencies. The recent strengthening of the yen has already caused challenges for traders engaged in this strategy. Additionally, the Treasury announced plans for expanded repurchases of longer-dated US bonds, with operations expected to range from $5 to $6 billion, further influencing market dynamics.
