22-Year-Old Mastermind Admits to $245M Bitcoin Heist in Federal Court
Key Takeaways
- A 22-year-old Singaporean man admitted guilt in federal court for masterminding a $245 million cryptocurrency theft operation
- The criminal enterprise employed sophisticated social engineering tactics and physical break-ins to obtain Bitcoin
- Proceeds funded 28 luxury vehicles, nightclub expenses exceeding $500,000 per night, and high-end merchandise
- The criminal enterprise operated from approximately October 2023 to May 2025, with 14 individuals charged
- The defendant faces up to 20 years behind bars; no sentencing hearing has been announced
On September 9, 2026, Malone Lam, a 22-year-old Singapore citizen, admitted guilt to federal racketeering charges connected to one of America’s most significant digital currency heists.
The criminal operation successfully extracted over $245 million worth of Bitcoin from individuals throughout the nation. Federal prosecutors state that Lam served as the ringleader, selecting targets and directing accomplices in executing the thefts.
US District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly presided over Lam’s guilty plea. The conviction carries a potential 20-year prison term. Authorities have yet to schedule the sentencing hearing.
The Mechanics Behind the Cryptocurrency Heist
The criminal syndicate formed their connections through online video game platforms. Participants originated from California, Connecticut, New York, Florida, and several foreign nations.
Perpetrators deployed social engineering techniques to manipulate targets into revealing sensitive credentials. Additional tactics included physical residential intrusions designed to compromise hardware storage devices and obtain private encryption keys.
An initial major incident involved the theft of over 4,100 Bitcoin from a Washington, D.C. resident in August 2024. The criminals impersonated Google and Gemini technical support personnel, manipulating the victim into resetting authentication protocols and sharing their computer display, which revealed private keys.
Illicit proceeds underwent laundering through cryptocurrency mixing services, digital asset exchanges, intermediary wallet addresses, and virtual private network infrastructure.
Evolution From Two Suspects to Major Federal Case
The investigation initially centered on Lam and associate Jeandiel Serrano, both apprehended in September 2024. Federal prosecutors broadened the indictment by May 2025 to encompass 12 more defendants and over $263 million in alleged cryptocurrency thefts.
Additional charges incorporated a separate $14 million theft occurring in July 2024 and a residential burglary targeting physical cryptocurrency storage.
Federal authorities revealed that Lam maintained operational control even while held in pretrial custody, including coordinating delivery of luxury items to his romantic partner.
The organization’s expenditures included a minimum of 28 high-performance vehicles valued as much as $3.8 million individually, chartered aircraft, upscale rental properties in Los Angeles, Miami, and the Hamptons, plus premium timepieces worth up to $500,000.
Entertainment venue expenses hit $500,000 during individual nights out. Witnesses reported that exclusive Hermes Birkin bags were tossed into party attendees as gifts.
Lam discontinued his formal education in Singapore at age 14 and arrived in America in October 2023, remaining after his visa authorization lapsed in January 2024.
In April 2026, accomplice Evan Tangeman received a 70-month prison sentence for his participation in money laundering activities.
US Attorney Jeanine Pirro stated: “If you build a cybercrime empire, we will find you, dismantle your operation, and hold you accountable.”
