Shares of Alibaba (BABA) advanced 2.76% on Tuesday, settling at $128.15, as market participants prepared for the e-commerce giant’s fiscal first-quarter 2027 earnings announcement scheduled for Thursday morning, August 20. The financial report will detail performance for the quarter that concluded on June 30, 2026. Company executives will conduct an earnings conference call beginning at 7:30 a.m. Eastern Time.
Alibaba Group Holding Limited, BABA
Analyst projections point to total revenue reaching RMB 268.5 billion ($38.63 billion), which would mark an 8% increase compared to the same period last year. However, significant capital allocation toward artificial intelligence infrastructure and consumer incentive programs is anticipated to pressure profitability metrics.
Adjusted earnings per American Depositary Share are expected to contract by approximately 27% year-over-year to RMB 10.8. Non-GAAP net income is similarly forecast to decline nearly 28% to RMB 25.47 billion.
Cloud Division Continues Strong Trajectory
Alibaba Cloud performance stands out as a critical metric investors will monitor closely Thursday. During the previous quarter ending in March, external cloud revenue expanded by 40%, while revenue from AI-related products achieved triple-digit growth for the 11th consecutive quarter.
The cloud segment’s adjusted EBITA increased 57% to RMB 3.80 billion in that reporting period. The company has committed a minimum of RMB 380 billion ($53 billion) over a three-year timeframe to develop AI and cloud infrastructure capabilities.
The company’s open-source Qwen artificial intelligence models have also established significant global traction. According to Hugging Face analytics, Qwen-based model derivatives reached 151,448 downloads, exceeding Meta’s Llama ecosystem by a factor of 2.6. Alibaba’s Qwen models have reportedly accumulated over 3 billion total downloads within a six-month window.
Instant Delivery Operations Continue to Drain Margins
The financial picture presents challenges on other fronts. Alibaba embedded quick-commerce functionality within Taobao to challenge competitors Meituan and JD.com, but delivery incentives and customer acquisition expenses have significantly eroded profit margins.
During the March quarter, operating results shifted to a loss of RMB 848 million. Free cash flow turned negative at RMB 17.30 billion, primarily due to capital expenditures totaling RMB 26.89 billion. Market participants will scrutinize Thursday’s report for evidence that these losses have moderated.
Investor sentiment received a boost Tuesday when Ant Group, in which Alibaba holds a one-third ownership stake, revealed that Alipay introduced a comprehensive AI platform designed for business clients. Ant Group CEO Cyril Han indicated the platform will enable AI-driven services and autonomous commerce capabilities.
BABA shares surged as much as 5% in Hong Kong trading following the disclosure. The Alipay platform builds upon the June introduction of Ah Bao, an AI agent interface enabling users to settle bills, purchase coffee, and locate electric vehicle charging facilities.
Contributing to the optimistic atmosphere, Serenity Capital Management established a new $6.72 billion position in BABA during the second quarter, acquiring 70,000 ADS. The holding now constitutes 2% of the fund’s total portfolio and ranks as its 11th-largest position.
Alibaba has also reached an agreement to divest its Lingxi Games division to Trustar Capital for over $2 billion, reallocating capital toward AI and cloud infrastructure priorities.
The stock’s 52-week trading range spans from $91.99 to $192.67. The 50-day moving average currently stands at $113.16, while the 200-day moving average registers at $128.97. BABA maintains a Strong Buy consensus rating from seven analysts surveyed over the past three months, with a mean price target of $182.33.
