Alibaba (BABA) Stock Faces Pressure After $10.2B Capital Raise Sparks Concerns
Key Takeaways
- Robin Zhu of Bernstein SocGen reduced his price target on BABA from $180 to $165 while maintaining a Buy recommendation
- The company’s $10.2 billion equity offering puzzled investors given Alibaba’s net cash position exceeding $30 billion
- Analysts maintain a Strong Buy outlook overall, with a consensus price target of $188.10
- First quarter revenue reached $39.64 billion, marking an 8.6% year-over-year increase, though earnings per share of $1.26 fell short of expectations by $0.68
- Congressional records show a Democratic representative divested between $100,001 and $250,000 worth of BABA shares on July 24
Alibaba (BABA) stock began trading Tuesday at $113.10, marking a significant decline from its 52-week peak of $192.67. The Chinese e-commerce giant faced additional pressure after Robin Zhu, an analyst at Bernstein SocGen, lowered his price objective from $180 to $165, although he maintained his optimistic Buy recommendation on the shares.
Alibaba Group Holding Limited, BABA
The downward revision came in response to Alibaba’s decision to raise $10.2 billion through an equity offering in Hong Kong, a strategic move that left several market participants perplexed. Given the company’s substantial net cash reserves exceeding $30 billion, investors struggled to understand the rationale behind accessing capital markets. Zhu noted that both the timing and perception of this fundraising effort negatively impacted investor sentiment and generated skepticism regarding management’s assertions about returns on capital expenditure investments.
In his updated analysis, Zhu revised his model to reflect higher server costs and rental pricing assumptions while simultaneously increasing his revenue projections for non-AI cloud services. His revised $165 price target employs a sum-of-the-parts methodology, evaluating Alibaba’s e-commerce and cloud computing divisions independently using forward-looking revenue and earnings metrics, then validating against a 15x forward earnings multiple.
Cloud Computing Expansion Remains Promising
Regarding cloud infrastructure, Zhu’s analysis of the Zhenwu 810E chip indicates a three-year return on investment timeline, while preliminary assessments of the more advanced M890 chip suggest an accelerated 2.5-year payback period. Escalating server rental rates and constrained supply conditions are expected to fuel accelerated cloud business expansion in the coming quarters.
The analyst emphasized that elevated capital expenditures in the near term should ultimately translate into robust Alicloud revenue acceleration and improved profit margins. Achieving the ambitious target of $100 billion in external cloud revenue by fiscal year 2031 would necessitate approximately RMB1 trillion in capital investments. While the recent equity raise partially addresses this funding requirement, Zhu suggested that a more substantial capital raise might have provided greater reassurance to the investment community.
Alibaba’s latest quarterly financial performance presented a nuanced picture. The company reported quarterly revenue of $39.64 billion, representing an 8.6% year-over-year increase and marginally surpassing the analyst consensus of $39.52 billion. However, earnings per share of $1.26 significantly underperformed the $1.94 consensus forecast, falling short by $0.68.
Trading Activity from Insiders and Politicians
Examining insider transactions, BABA President J. Evans divested 720,000 shares at an average price of $94.95 per share on June 29, representing a 96% reduction in his holdings. Conversely, CEO Yongming Wu acquired 350,000 shares at $14.24 apiece on August 24, expanding his ownership position by 34.5%.
According to a congressional disclosure filed on September 4, Representative Gilbert Ray Cisneros Jr. (D-CA) sold BABA stock valued between $100,001 and $250,000 on July 24.
Multiple institutional investors expanded their BABA positions during the first quarter. Aureus Asset Management increased its stake by an impressive 511%, while Teachers Retirement System of Kentucky grew its holdings by 24.5%.
The broader Wall Street community maintains a Moderate Buy consensus rating on BABA, comprised of 15 Buy ratings, two Strong Buy ratings, and five Hold ratings.
The consensus price target of $187.45 suggests potential upside of approximately 66% from current trading levels. Robert W. Baird reduced its price target from $164 to $160 on August 21, while Morgan Stanley elevated its target to $190 in May.
BABA stock currently trades with a 50-day moving average of $116.54 and a 200-day moving average of $124.56.
