Alphabet (GOOGL) Stock Surges as Berkshire Hathaway Doubles Down with $17B Investment
Key Highlights
- Berkshire Hathaway increased its Alphabet position by approximately $17 billion during Q2, elevating it to the conglomerate’s third-largest holding with about 106 million shares
- Berkshire CEO Greg Abel described Google as a “significant player” in artificial intelligence, drawing on insights from AI adoption throughout Berkshire’s diverse portfolio
- The initial Berkshire investment of $10 billion occurred approximately 15 months prior at a 6.5% markdown
- A U.S. federal court denied the Department of Justice’s petition to compel Google to divest its AdX advertising platform
- Analyst consensus on GOOGL stands at Strong Buy across 28 Wall Street firms, with a mean price target of $425.88 indicating potential 26% gains
Shares of Alphabet (GOOGL) are advancing in Thursday’s pre-market session, hovering near $337.12 with a 0.63% gain. The upward momentum stems from two distinct developments: a substantial endorsement from Berkshire Hathaway and a positive legal outcome regarding Google’s advertising technology operations.
Speaking with CNBC on Wednesday, Berkshire CEO Greg Abel disclosed that the investment firm accumulated approximately $17 billion in Alphabet shares throughout the second quarter. This acquisition represented Berkshire’s most substantial portfolio addition for that period.
The conglomerate’s current Alphabet holdings total roughly 106 million shares across Class A and Class C stock, with a present valuation near $36.6 billion. This positioning establishes Alphabet as Berkshire’s third-most valuable equity investment.
Abel emphasized that the strategic decision reflected real-world observations rather than theoretical speculation. With ownership stakes spanning numerous sectors, Berkshire maintains unique insight into practical AI implementation and its tangible outcomes.
“We have a lot of visibility from within our companies as to how we’re using AI, what type of benefits it’s delivering, so that brought incremental interest, and then we saw Google as a significant player,” Abel told CNBC’s Becky Quick.
Berkshire initiated its Alphabet position roughly 15 months earlier with a $10 billion commitment secured at a 6.5% discount. Abel revealed he personally advocated for that discount percentage, receiving Warren Buffett’s approval.
Federal Judge Rules in Google’s Favor on AdX
Complementing the Berkshire announcement, a federal judge on Wednesday dismissed the Justice Department’s petition demanding that Google divest its AdX advertising exchange. This ruling eliminates a significant regulatory uncertainty surrounding Alphabet’s operations.
The judicial determination allows Google to retain AdX ownership instead of undergoing mandatory divestment. From an investor perspective, this outcome delivers enhanced predictability concerning Alphabet’s advertising technology revenue pipeline.
The combination of these developments is prompting increased investor interest in the stock as Thursday’s trading session approaches.
Abel also highlighted an ancillary advantage for Berkshire stemming from AI expansion. Escalating data center requirements are pushing electrical power demand upward, potentially benefiting Berkshire Hathaway Energy.
Analyst Community Maintains Optimistic Outlook
Wall Street sentiment toward GOOGL remains decidedly positive. Among 28 analysts tracking the stock, 24 assign Buy ratings while four recommend Hold positions. Zero analysts currently maintain Sell recommendations.
The consensus price target stands at $425.88, suggesting approximately 26% appreciation potential from present trading levels.
Alphabet ranks among five major hyperscalers—alongside Microsoft, Meta, Amazon and Oracle—channeling substantial capital into AI infrastructure development. Goldman Sachs projects combined hyperscaler capital expenditures will reach approximately $1 trillion by 2026.
During the identical quarter featuring its Alphabet accumulation, Berkshire also expanded its Delta Air Lines stake by 44%, representing roughly $1.6 billion in additional investment.
