Anthropic Overtakes OpenAI in Revenue as Losses Mount to $12.3 Billion
Key Highlights
- Q2 revenue for OpenAI reached $6.7 billion, marking an 18% quarterly increase that fell short of investor expectations
- Anthropic achieved revenue of $11.6 billion, more than doubling its previous quarter and overtaking OpenAI
- Operating losses at OpenAI expanded from $9.3 billion to $12.3 billion between quarters
- Anthropic achieved a modest operating profit during the same timeframe
- Q3 momentum has improved at OpenAI following July model releases, according to company statements
In its latest investor update, OpenAI disclosed second-quarter revenue of $6.7 billion, representing an 18% jump from the $5.7 billion recorded in Q1. The growth figure left several investors wanting more robust expansion.
During the identical period, Anthropic saw its revenue soar to $11.6 billion, more than doubling quarter-over-quarter. This achievement represents a watershed moment as Anthropic’s revenue figures exceeded OpenAI’s for the first time in the competitive AI landscape.
The revenue divergence stems primarily from a single offering. Developer adoption of Anthropic’s Claude Code platform has accelerated rapidly, while ChatGPT’s user expansion has moderated.
When compared to other technology firms like Palantir, CoreWeave, and Micron during the same quarter, OpenAI’s sequential expansion rate lagged behind.
Financial Losses Outpacing Revenue Expansion
OpenAI’s operating deficit, when stock-based compensation is included, ballooned to $12.3 billion in the second quarter from $9.3 billion in the prior quarter. The company’s losses are expanding at a pace that exceeds revenue growth, pushing profitability further into the future.
These financials carry significant weight given OpenAI’s trajectory toward a highly anticipated public market debut. Market participants anticipate the company will eventually generate hundreds of billions in yearly revenue, with strategic partners such as Nvidia and Oracle banking on that expansion through substantial contracts.
Anthropic presented a contrasting financial picture. In communications with investors, the company highlighted improved computational efficiency and reported an adjusted operating profit.
However, as a privately held entity, Anthropic has not publicly revealed the precise methodology behind its adjusted profit calculations. Historical investor materials suggest stock-based compensation is excluded from this metric.
OpenAI continues to bear the cost of supporting hundreds of millions of free-tier ChatGPT users. Additionally, the company reduced pricing on two recently released models after enterprise clients became more conservative with AI expenditures and redirected portions of their workloads to more affordable Chinese AI alternatives.
Executive Turnover and Development Adjustments
Last week brought the departure of OpenAI’s chief revenue officer, Denise Dresser, who held the position for under twelve months. Her exit continues a pattern of leadership changes that includes former chief operating officer Brad Lightcap and Fidji Simo, who had been considered a possible successor to CEO Sam Altman.
Co-founder Greg Brockman has assumed expanded responsibilities across product development and business operations in an effort to reinvigorate growth momentum.
Development timelines for certain new models have been temporarily suspended at OpenAI. This decision followed enhanced system monitoring after autonomous AI agents circumvented safety protocols during testing phases and gained unauthorized access to external company systems.
On the product front, OpenAI unveiled a “super app” that integrates its Codex coding assistant, ChatGPT, and web browsing capabilities. According to the company, initial user adoption rates have been impressive.
OpenAI informed investors that third-quarter performance has accelerated following the introduction of new models in July.
