Apogee Enterprises, Inc., APOG
The company, headquartered in Minneapolis, announced adjusted quarterly earnings of $1.17 per share for its fiscal second quarter—nearly double the $0.63 per share Wall Street had projected.
Quarterly sales totaled $391.1 million, marking a 9% climb compared to the prior-year period. This figure easily cleared the analyst estimate of $359.46 million.
Beyond the impressive quarterly performance, Apogee boosted its forward-looking projections, a move that typically sparks investor enthusiasm.
For fiscal 2027, the company now anticipates adjusted earnings per share in the $3.00 to $3.40 range. This represents an upward revision from the earlier guidance of $2.70 to $3.25, with the updated midpoint comfortably above the Street’s $2.87 consensus.
Management also increased its revenue forecast to between $1.46 billion and $1.50 billion, up from the prior $1.38 billion to $1.43 billion target.
Performance Drivers
Much of the quarterly outperformance stemmed from pricing discipline and ongoing operational efficiency initiatives the company has undertaken. Apogee refers to a key component of this strategy as “Project Fortify 2.”
The company’s recent acquisition of Kalwall also contributed meaningfully, delivering $16.4 million in additional sales during the period. This benefit was partially offset by weaker volume trends in what management characterized as an uneven demand backdrop.
Executive Chairman and CEO Don Nolan attributed the strong results to consistent execution throughout the organization. He noted that the solid first-half performance gave leadership confidence to raise full-year expectations.
The company’s operating margin widened by 110 basis points to reach 8.6%. Adjusted EBITDA climbed nearly 12% to $49.5 million, while the corresponding margin expanded from 12.4% to 12.7%.
Gross profit margin improved by 150 basis points to 24.6%. Favorable pricing, enhanced productivity, and the Kalwall integration all contributed positively, though elevated material and production expenses provided some headwinds.
Business Unit Performance
Apogee operates through four distinct business segments, with three delivering robust sales increases during the quarter.
The Architectural Glass segment led growth with a 21% revenue jump to $87.4 million, driven primarily by the Kalwall addition. Architectural Services reported an 8% gain to $108.5 million, fueled by increased project activity.
Performance Surfaces revenue advanced 14% to $55.3 million on both volume and pricing strength. The Architectural Metals division saw more modest growth of 2%, finishing at $143.5 million.
While reported net income declined slightly to $22.4 million from $23.6 million in the year-ago quarter, and GAAP diluted EPS edged down to $1.07 from $1.10, the adjusted figures paint a stronger picture after accounting for one-time costs.
During the quarter, Apogee completed two strategic acquisitions: Kalwall and Groglass. Leadership indicated that initial results from the Kalwall integration have exceeded expectations.
From a financial position standpoint, operating cash flow for the first half of the fiscal year increased to $43.3 million compared to $37.3 million in the prior-year period. The company distributed $27.3 million to shareholders via share repurchases and dividend payments.
Total long-term debt at quarter-end was $335.5 million, resulting in a net leverage ratio of 1.7 times adjusted EBITDA.
