Canada's Trade Surplus Reaches C$4.2 Billion in August

Canada's merchandise trade surplus expanded significantly to C$4.2 billion in August 2026, up from C$787 million in July. This marks the sixth consecutive month of trade surplus for the country, driven by a 2.5% increase in exports and a 2.0% decline in imports. The rise in exports was broad-based, with notable increases in energy exports, which rose by 4.7%, and a 10.1% jump in industrial machinery, equipment, and parts.

Exports to the United States played a crucial role in this growth, increasing by 8.1% while imports from the U.S. fell by 2.5%. This shift widened Canada's trade surplus with the U.S. to C$11.2 billion, marking the largest monthly change recorded in this bilateral trade balance. The increase in exports may have been influenced by new U.S. tariffs announced in July, which prompted businesses to expedite shipments before the tariffs took effect.

In terms of volume, total exports rose by 2.5%, while imports saw their first decline in seven months, primarily due to an 8.8% drop in motor vehicles and parts. The Canadian dollar also appreciated by 1.1 U.S. cents on average against the U.S. dollar during August, affecting the trade figures. When measured in U.S. dollars, Canadian exports increased by 4.0%, while imports decreased by 0.6%. These trade figures provide early insights into how the new U.S. tariffs may be influencing Canada's trade dynamics.
