Apple Brings Free AI Note-Taking to the Watch

Remembering what happened in a meeting has historically meant taking handwritten notes or downloading an app like Otter, Fireflies or Granola.

This week, Apple announced a version of that idea built into the Apple Watch. Siri Recap is coming in beta later this year to the Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4, according to Apple’s support documentation.

Siri Recap will listen and automatically generate a title, summary and key points from a conversation, reviewable later in the Siri app, Apple said in a Wednesday (Sept. 10) press release.

The audio is never recorded or stored, and that no one, not even Apple, can access it, according to the support documentation. Once available, a user will be able to leave it running all day, set it to a schedule, or turn it off.

What Apple left out of this week’s announcement is as notable as what it included. Siri Recap will produce a summary, not a transcript, and will not identify who said what, the support documentation said.

Audio will flow into a protected buffer inside the S11 chip’s Secure Exclave, where a lightweight model first determines only whether speech is occurring nearby, according to Apple’s Audio Intelligence Privacy Overview. Once detected, audio will be sent encrypted to a paired iPhone’s Secure Exclave, transcribed and condensed, then permanently deleted.

Where Standalone Note-Takers Still Win

Granola got to the wrist first and already has real functionality while Apple’s remains unreleased. The company launched a dedicated Apple Watch app in July, letting a user start a recording with one tap, according to a July 28 company blog post. Audio syncs to a paired iPhone and generates full notes with transcripts and action items.

Co-Founder Chris Pedregal said internal testing found a significant share of employees’ mobile Granola use shifted to the Watch once the app became available, Inc. reported. Granola raised $125 million in a Series C round in March, reaching a $1.5 billion valuation, TechCrunch reported.

Otter and Fireflies don’t run directly on the Watch at all; the only way to use either is to record with a separate app and upload the file afterward, according to a comparison of wrist-based note-taking options by BlueDotHQ. Instead, both compete on enterprise depth. Otter.ai handles real-time transcription, live captioning and automated CRM write-back through structured integrations, according to Otter’s site. Fireflies.ai runs more than 200 customizable AI skills across sales, recruiting, marketing and operations, according to Fireflies’ comparison.

That split maps onto where Apple’s feature sits, once it ships. Siri Recap is a free consumer product built into hardware, aimed at someone who wants a general reminder. Otter and Fireflies are enterprise tools sold on integration depth and team workflows. Granola is the outlier, already live on Apple’s own hardware while Apple’s own version remains in beta.

Whether This Reshapes the Market Is Still Unclear

That gap is the question here. If a basic version of note-taking eventually ships free on hardware people already own, the casual use case could get harder for standalone apps to charge for. Whether that happens depends on how many people adopt Siri Recap once it’s available, and whether Apple expands toward the deeper features its competitors already offer.

Trust may matter as much as capability. Apple’s privacy overview notes that a related feature, Live Rewind, plays an audible chime and shows an on-screen indicator when it captures the last 15 seconds of speech, while Siri Recap is designed with no equivalent alert, since Apple’s position is that no alert is needed when no recording exists. Whether consumers accept that or treat an always-listening watch with the same skepticism aimed at other AI wearables, will likely determine how much of the casual note-taking market Apple’s entry affects once it leaves beta.
