August Inflation Report Holds Steady at 3.4% as Fed Rate Hike Probability Soars
Key Highlights
- Stock futures advanced Friday following August’s Consumer Price Index report showing 3.4% annual inflation, unchanged from the previous month
- Inflation on a monthly basis accelerated to 0.4%, compared to July’s 0.1% reading, maintaining Federal Reserve concerns
- Market pricing for a Federal Reserve interest rate increase next week surged to 72%, up significantly from even odds just seven days earlier
- Brent crude oil briefly exceeded $108 per barrel while diesel prices reached an unprecedented $6 per gallon
- Oracle’s stock price climbed more than 5% before the opening bell following robust cloud business results
US stock futures moved higher Friday morning as market participants digested the latest inflation figures, which continue to run above the Federal Reserve’s preferred target just days before its upcoming monetary policy decision.
Dow Jones Industrial Average futures advanced 0.5%. Futures contracts for the S&P 500 similarly increased 0.5%, while Nasdaq-100 futures moved up 0.6%.

The gains followed four consecutive sessions of losses across all three benchmark indices, with each heading toward weekly declines.
Breaking Down the Inflation Numbers
At 8:30 a.m. Eastern, the Bureau of Labor Statistics published its August Consumer Price Index data.
Annual price growth registered at 3.4%, matching the July figure. On a monthly basis, however, prices climbed 0.4%, representing a notable acceleration from the prior month’s 0.1% increase.
The core measure, which excludes volatile food and energy categories, showed a 2.4% annual increase, marginally below July’s 2.5% reading. Core inflation on a monthly basis registered at 0.3%, an uptick from the previous 0.2%.
While the figures aligned with analyst forecasts, they underscore that price pressures remain significantly elevated compared to the Fed’s 2% inflation target.
Rate Hike Expectations Surge
Financial markets swiftly adjusted their outlook. The implied probability of the Federal Reserve raising interest rates at its upcoming meeting jumped to 72%, a substantial increase from approximately 50% just one week prior.
The central bank has been battling elevated inflation for more than twelve months. Although the rate of price increases has moderated since spring, the current trajectory continues to trouble monetary policymakers.
Energy market dynamics have compounded these challenges. Brent crude oil prices surged past $108 per barrel before retreating modestly on Friday. Meanwhile, diesel costs reached an all-time high of $6 per gallon.
Elevated energy expenses contribute directly to overall inflation measures while also constraining consumer purchasing power, complicating the Federal Reserve’s mandate.
Treasury bond yields have also climbed, driving up financing costs for everything from home mortgages to consumer credit products and business loans.
Oracle Rallies on Strong Cloud Results
A notable exception to Friday’s mixed market sentiment came from Oracle. The company’s shares surged over 5% in premarket trading following its latest earnings report, which highlighted impressive expansion in its cloud computing division.
Oracle’s performance provided a noteworthy contrast against the backdrop of persistent inflation concerns and heightened expectations for tighter monetary policy.
