Australia's Employment Expected to Rebound in August Amid Economic Uncertainty

Australia's labour market is anticipated to show signs of recovery in August, with expectations of an increase in employment following a decline in July. The upcoming labour force data, set to be released on 24 September at 11:30 AM Sydney time, is projected to reveal a rise of approximately 20,000 jobs, although forecasts vary widely from 10,000 to 47,000. Westpac, a financial services provider, is predicting a more optimistic gain of 30,000 jobs. The unemployment rate is expected to remain steady at 4.5%.

The previous month saw a surprising drop in employment by about 16,000, which fell short of market expectations and followed strong gains of 38,000 in May and 80,000 in June. Despite the decline, the unemployment rate only edged up slightly from 4.43% to 4.46%, as a decrease in the number of job seekers contributed to a stable unemployment figure. Analysts suggest that the participation rate, which measures the share of working-age Australians either employed or actively seeking work, will hold steady at 66.9% in August, supporting the forecasted unemployment rate.

The timing of this data release is significant, coinciding with the Reserve Bank of Australia's (RBA) meeting on 29 September, where a rate increase is widely anticipated. A robust employment figure could bolster expectations for further monetary tightening in November. Conversely, a second consecutive decline in employment could raise concerns about the labour market's resilience and influence the RBA's policy decisions moving forward. Early indicators, including a recent S&P Global flash PMI report, suggest that private sector employment is already experiencing a downturn, marking the steepest decline since October 2020.
