US and Iran Engage in Indirect Talks Amid Easing Oil Prices

The United States and Iran have initiated a series of indirect discussions during the UN General Assembly in New York, as confirmed by US special envoy Steve Witkoff. These talks, facilitated by mediators, aim to address ongoing geopolitical tensions and have contributed to a slight decline in oil prices. Witkoff noted that the discussions were lengthy and that mediators shuttled between the two delegations throughout the day, although no specific details about the talks were disclosed.

US President Donald Trump characterized a separate three-hour meeting with an Iranian delegation as productive, expressing optimism about future negotiations. However, he indicated that a comprehensive peace deal would likely be postponed until after the upcoming US midterm elections in November. Iran has outlined several conditions for negotiations, including an end to military conflicts, the release of frozen assets, and the lifting of sanctions, which suggests that reaching an agreement may be complex and protracted.

In response to the diplomatic developments, oil prices have continued to ease, with Brent crude settling around $99 per barrel and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) near $95. This decline follows the resumption of Saudi Arabia's East-West pipeline and increased crude flows through the Strait of Hormuz. Despite the easing prices, analysts caution that the market remains sensitive to geopolitical headlines, particularly regarding the outcomes of US-Iran diplomacy and potential disruptions from ongoing conflicts in the region.
