Canada's Major Banks Collaborate on Tokenized Deposit System

Canada's six largest banks have initiated a joint exploration of a tokenized deposit system in Canadian dollars. The participating banks include the Bank of Montreal, CIBC, National Bank of Canada, Royal Bank of Canada, Scotiabank, and TD Bank Group. This initiative was announced on Tuesday by TD Bank Group, outlining a two-stage plan that begins with testing the transfer of tokenized deposits between these financial institutions.

The proposed system aims to facilitate faster and programmable payments while ensuring that customer funds remain within the regulated banking framework. Tokenized deposits differ from stablecoins, as they represent traditional bank deposits recorded on a blockchain, maintaining the bank's liability for the funds. In contrast, stablecoins are separate digital assets backed by reserves held by their issuers.

While the announcement emphasizes exploration, it does not commit the banks to launching tokenized deposits at this stage. Experts suggest that this collaboration marks a significant shift in how Canadian banks approach digital money, moving towards a unified model rather than individual initiatives. As Canada prepares to implement regulations for digital currencies by 2027, this development could influence the landscape of digital financial services in the country.
