Commonwealth Bank of Australia Predicts Modest Job Growth Ahead of Labour Force Data Release

Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) anticipates that Australia's labour market will show modest job growth in August, with an expected increase of 15,000 jobs. This forecast is below the market consensus of approximately 20,000 and significantly lower than Westpac's prediction of 30,000. The unemployment rate is projected to remain steady at 4.5%, consistent with previous figures, as the participation rate is expected to hold at 66.9%.

The upcoming labour force data, set to be released on September 24 at 11:30 AM Sydney time, comes just days before the Reserve Bank of Australia's (RBA) policy meeting on September 28-29, where a rate hike is widely anticipated. CBA's analysis suggests that a gradual easing in the labour market is necessary to help curb inflation, which has been a growing concern for the RBA. The bank's internal data indicates that while employment growth remains steady, it is weaker than what recent official statistics suggest, and hiring intentions have shown signs of easing.

CBA's forecast reflects a broader trend of slowing economic growth impacting demand for workers. The bank warns that small fluctuations in labour supply can significantly affect headline unemployment figures, as seen in previous months. The adjustment in the Australian Bureau of Statistics' seasonal adjustment methodology may also influence the data's variability. Overall, CBA's outlook indicates a cautious approach to the labour market, emphasizing the need for a balanced assessment as the RBA considers its monetary policy moving forward.
