Australia's Q2 GDP Growth Exceeds Expectations, Rate Hike Likely

Australia's economy experienced stronger than anticipated growth in the second quarter, with real GDP rising by 0.4 percent compared to the previous quarter. This figure surpassed the Reuters poll estimate of 0.3 percent and marked an increase from the 0.3 percent growth recorded in the first quarter. Annual GDP growth reached 2.1 percent, exceeding the forecast of 1.8 percent, although it declined from 2.5 percent in the previous quarter.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics reported that household consumption contributed positively to GDP, adding 0.2 percentage points, while net exports and public demand each contributed 0.1 percentage point. A notable 10 percent increase in electric vehicle purchases significantly bolstered growth, offsetting declines in fuel consumption and travel due to disruptions linked to the Middle East conflict. In contrast, business investment fell by 0.5 percent after a surge in the first quarter, indicating a potential cooling in corporate spending.

Following the release of the GDP data, market expectations for a rate hike by the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) in September increased to 57 percent, up from 48 percent prior to the announcement. The Australian dollar strengthened slightly, trading around 0.7150 against the US dollar. Despite the growth, inflation remains a concern, with the trimmed mean inflation rate holding at 3.6 percent, above the RBA's target range of 2 to 3 percent. This persistent inflationary pressure complicates the central bank's efforts to balance economic growth with price stability.
