Bank of England Official Advocates for Continued Hawkish Stance on Inflation

Megan Greene, a prominent official at the Bank of England (BoE), has reiterated her call for a proactive approach to combat potential second-round inflation effects. She emphasized that the risk of these effects is now perceived to be greater than previously estimated. Greene noted that wage disinflation has stagnated at levels that are inconsistent with the BoE's target of 2% inflation, indicating that inflationary pressures may persist longer than anticipated.

Greene's stance aligns with her previous dissenting votes for a rate hike, advocating for an increase to 4% during the September meeting. As the BoE prepares for its upcoming November meeting, market expectations are heavily leaning towards a 25 basis points hike, with a probability of 96.7%. This suggests that Greene's views are gaining traction among her peers, reflecting a broader shift towards a more hawkish monetary policy among central banks globally, particularly following discussions at the recent International Monetary Fund meetings in Thailand.

The current market response has seen the British pound strengthen, rising by 71 pips to 1.3373. However, concerns remain regarding the Federal Reserve's lack of a similar hawkish pivot, which could lead to unexpected market reactions during their upcoming meeting on October 28. Greene's comments highlight a growing consensus among central bank officials that early intervention may be necessary to address persistent inflationary trends.
