Bank of England Officials Express Concerns Over Rising Energy Prices

Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey has indicated that the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran has contributed to rising energy prices, with potential for further increases. He noted that attacks on Russian refineries by Ukrainian forces are also influencing the energy market, adding to the inflationary pressures faced by the UK economy.

Monetary Policy Committee member Jonathan Taylor emphasized the importance of maintaining a moderately restrictive bank rate to safeguard against external economic risks, particularly those stemming from volatile energy prices. He urged vigilance regarding the possibility of persistent energy price increases and their impact on wage and price setting in the UK.

Deputy Governor Ben Broadbent expressed concern about the long duration of elevated oil prices and the potential for second-round effects on the economy. However, he also pointed out that the domestic inflation situation appears relatively stable, while the global inflationary landscape presents significant upside risks. The consensus among officials is that while the UK economy remains weak, external factors are increasingly threatening economic stability.
