Apple (AAPL) Eyes 2029 AI Server Launch With Nvidia Tech Integration
Key Highlights
- Apple is building an AI-focused server platform powered by its upcoming M8 Ultra processors alongside Nvidia’s NVLink Fusion connectivity solution
- Target customers include artificial intelligence developers, enterprise clients, and governmental organizations seeking expanded computational capabilities
- This initiative represents Apple’s return to dedicated server offerings following the 2011 discontinuation of its Xserve product line
- Commercial availability isn’t anticipated before 2029, with possibility of project cancellation remaining
- Current CEO John Ternus greenlit the initiative approximately one year ago during his tenure as hardware engineering chief
Apple is reportedly exploring a comeback in the enterprise server space, merging its proprietary silicon with networking infrastructure from Nvidia, based on reporting from The Information.
The tech giant is engineering an artificial intelligence server configuration utilizing either two or four units of its forthcoming M8 Ultra processors, representing the company’s most powerful chip designs. The intended market encompasses AI software engineers, corporate enterprises, and government agencies requiring enhanced processing capabilities.
Marking Apple’s Server Market Re-Entry After 13 Years
This development would signal Apple’s first venture into dedicated server hardware since discontinuing its Xserve platform in 2011. The Xserve lineup operated between 2002 and 2011, utilizing processors from Intel and IBM, though it failed to achieve significant market penetration.
The renewed initiative emerges amid explosive growth in AI computing requirements. Apple reported Mac revenue climbing 29% year-over-year to reach $10.3 billion during its fiscal 2026 third quarter, representing the strongest performance across all Apple product segments.
AI research facilities and software developers have allegedly purchased thousands upon thousands of Mac mini and Mac Studio systems to power their workflows. A specialized server solution could directly address this expanding market opportunity.
Nvidia’s Technology Integration Strategy
Apple is evaluating Nvidia’s NVLink Fusion platform to interconnect the M8 Ultra processors. NVLink Fusion delivers pre-engineered connectors and memory architecture enabling custom silicon to integrate with Nvidia’s comprehensive data center ecosystem.
Certain Apple engineers believe Nvidia provides the most effective connectivity solution currently available for this undertaking, according to The Information’s sources.
This potential partnership would represent a significant warming of ties between both corporations. Apple and Nvidia have maintained a tense relationship spanning nearly twenty years, originating from conflicts that culminated in Apple severing connections following widespread MacBook malfunctions attributed to Nvidia graphics processors.
John Ternus, who served as Apple’s hardware engineering leader when this project commenced roughly one year ago, championed the server initiative. Ternus has subsequently assumed the position of Apple’s CEO.
Apple has recently updated its Mac portfolio with M6, M5 Pro, M5 Max, and M5 Ultra processors. According to the company, the 2-nanometer M6 processor provides up to quadruple the AI processing speed compared to earlier chip generations.
Market introduction of the server platform isn’t projected until 2029. The initiative remains subject to potential cancellation, or Apple might proceed with launch while excluding Nvidia’s technology entirely.
Neither Apple nor Nvidia provided responses to comment requests. Reuters could not independently confirm the reporting.
Apple stock advanced 0.7% during Wednesday morning trading session following the news.
