Asian Markets React to Fed Rate Hike and Lower Oil Prices

Asian markets showed resilience on Thursday, with Japan's Nikkei share average rising approximately 0.2% after an earlier gain of nearly 1%. The broader Topix index also saw an increase of about 0.6%. The Federal Reserve's decision to raise its key interest rate by a quarter point was widely anticipated, and market participants appeared to have already priced in this move, focusing instead on fluctuations in oil prices.

Brent crude oil prices fell around 2.5% following reports that Saudi Arabia is routing additional crude cargoes through Oman, alleviating concerns over potential supply disruptions in the Middle East. This decline in oil prices contributed positively to market sentiment, overshadowing the Fed's rate decision. Analysts noted that the direction of Treasury yields and oil prices will be more significant for market dynamics than any incremental changes from the Fed going forward.

In South Korea, the Kospi index opened about 1% higher, reaching near 6,790, while the Kosdaq rose approximately 0.8% to around 823. Major companies such as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix experienced gains, with Samsung trading up about 1.4%. South Korean markets reacted to the Fed's decision with a sense of stability, as the rate hike had been largely expected. Investors are now looking ahead to the Bank of Japan's policy meeting, where another quarter point hike is anticipated.
