Broadcom (AVGO) Stock: Is Jim Cramer Right About This AI Chip Opportunity?
Key Takeaways
- During a recent Mad Money broadcast, Jim Cramer highlighted Broadcom as possibly undervalued, noting the shares “may be too cheap to ignore” following a 10%+ decline over the past month
- Shares have retreated approximately 7% following the September 2 earnings announcement and currently trade roughly 30% beneath their peak levels
- Third-quarter fiscal revenue reached $29.6 billion, representing an 85.5% annual increase, while AI semiconductor sales skyrocketed 221% to $16.7 billion
- The company elevated its annual AI revenue forecast to $58 billion, with long-term targets reaching $230 billion by the 2028 fiscal year
- The forward price-to-earnings ratio has contracted to 18.1x, while fundamental valuation analysis suggests a fair price of $459.95, indicating potential gains of 35.5%
Broadcom shares were changing hands near $347 on September 17, climbing approximately 2.3% during the session, though remaining substantially below the peaks recorded in June.
During his September 14 Mad Money broadcast, Jim Cramer identified Broadcom as among the more compelling opportunities within a beaten-down artificial intelligence sector. His assessment was direct: the semiconductor giant has experienced excessive punishment following what he characterized as a modest guidance shortfall.
“Down here, roughly 150 points below its June high, the stock may be too cheap to ignore,” Cramer stated.
The decline Cramer referenced began following Broadcom’s September 2 fiscal third-quarter earnings release. Revenue totaled $29.59 billion, surpassing analyst expectations of $29.25 billion. AI chip sales specifically reached $16.7 billion, marking a 221% year-over-year expansion.
Even with that performance, shares declined 3.39% during that trading session. The market’s concern centered on forward-looking projections. Upcoming quarter guidance was interpreted as meeting expectations rather than delivering the substantial beats that investors had grown accustomed to.
This dynamic has emerged as a recurring theme. The second fiscal quarter followed an identical trajectory: strong results followed by a 13% stock retreat.
Forward Outlook and Revenue Projections
Company leadership increased their full-year AI revenue target to $58 billion from the previous $56 billion estimate. Looking further ahead, management projected $115 billion for fiscal 2027 and $230 billion for fiscal 2028. The company’s remaining performance obligations total $179.2 billion, providing substantial insight into secured future revenue streams.
Broadcom services major technology companies including Alphabet and Meta as customers for its hyperscale AI infrastructure, delivering specialized accelerators and advanced networking technologies for some of the industry’s most ambitious AI deployments.
Total revenue expanded 85.5% on an annual basis during the fiscal third quarter, while levered free cash flow totaled $39.4 billion through July 31. The company’s return on equity currently measures 44.2%.
Valuation Metrics and Technical Analysis
The recent post-earnings decline has compressed AVGO’s forward price-to-earnings multiple to approximately 18.1x, representing a notable contraction from earlier 2024 levels. Based on trailing twelve-month earnings, the multiple stands at 42.4x. The free cash flow yield currently measures 2.4%.
Fundamental valuation frameworks indicate a fair value estimate of $459.95, pointing to potential appreciation of 35.5% from present price levels. Wall Street analyst consensus targets suggest even greater upside potential, with combined projections indicating approximately 57.6% gains as of late July.
Technical indicators present a more cautious outlook. Both daily and weekly momentum signals register Strong Sell readings. The daily Relative Strength Index stands at 32.46, approaching oversold conditions. The weekly RSI measures 43.26.
Institutional interest remains robust. Data from Insider Monkey shows 170 hedge funds maintaining Broadcom positions during the latest reporting period, representing only a marginal decrease from 173 funds in the preceding quarter. Fisher Asset Management commanded the largest stake with 15.1 million shares.
Short selling activity remains minimal, with merely 1.08% of available float held in short positions as of August 31.
AVGO shares were trading at $347.30, representing a gain of $7.79 for the session.
