Coinbase (COIN) Stock Surges 12% Following Filing for U.S. Stock Perpetual Futures
Key Highlights
- Shares of Coinbase finished Friday’s session 12% higher, reaching $194.25.
- The crypto exchange submitted an application to launch single-stock perpetual futures for U.S. traders.
- Approximately 50 to 60 major stocks are expected in the initial offering, featuring companies like Apple, Microsoft, Tesla, and Nvidia.
- These contracts would enable round-the-clock trading five days a week with no expiration dates.
- Coinbase’s submission remains under review by the CFTC awaiting approval.
Shares of Coinbase (COIN) concluded Friday’s trading at $194.25, marking an 11.66% increase—approximately 12% when rounded—after hitting an intraday peak of $196.20. The session saw roughly 21.4 million shares change hands.
The rally occurred alongside Bitcoin’s recovery above the $80,000 threshold and followed Coinbase’s regulatory filing to introduce single-stock perpetual futures for American investors. Bitcoin itself appreciated nearly 6% during Friday’s session.
On September 18, Coinbase Derivatives submitted documentation to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission requesting authorization to list single-stock perpetual futures. The regulatory agency currently shows the submission under “Approval Pending” status.
According to reporting by The Wall Street Journal, Coinbase’s preliminary plan encompasses perpetual futures contracts tied to approximately 50 to 60 publicly traded U.S. companies. The roster is anticipated to feature major names such as Apple, Microsoft, Tesla, and Nvidia.
Round-the-Clock Stock Market Access Through Futures
The planned offerings would provide American traders with continuous access to individual equity exposure through futures instruments operating 24 hours daily, five days weekly. Perpetual contracts differ from traditional futures by eliminating predetermined expiration dates.
Traders can maintain these positions indefinitely provided they satisfy margin requirements. A funding rate mechanism helps anchor the contract’s price to the actual value of the underlying equity.
These instruments can also provide leveraged market exposure, enabling traders to command larger positions with reduced capital outlay, though this simultaneously amplifies potential downside risk.
Coinbase characterized the application as extending a product category that has gained traction in cryptocurrency markets to traditional equities. The company emphasized that regulatory authorization must be secured before any trading activity commences.
The CFTC documentation categorizes the proposed offering as both a security futures product and a single-stock future, with September 18 recorded as the official filing date.
Coinbase has pursued additional regulatory pathways to enable these products. On September 1, Coinbase Derivatives submitted Form 1-N documentation with the Securities and Exchange Commission seeking registration as a national securities exchange for security futures.
Expanding Beyond Crypto Derivatives
Coinbase currently provides stock perpetual futures to qualified international users outside American jurisdiction. The exchange introduced these contracts in March, featuring products that track prominent U.S. equities and market indexes.
Both Apple and Nvidia were included when the international product launched. U.S.-based customers were deliberately excluded from accessing those offerings.
This U.S.-focused filing represents Coinbase’s broader push into regulated derivatives markets. The platform already facilitates perpetual-style cryptocurrency futures trading through its domestic derivatives division.
Friday’s stock performance occurred within a broader recovery across cryptocurrency-related equities. Coinbase had already advanced 5.75% during Thursday’s session before adding another 11.66% on Friday, producing a combined two-day gain approaching 18%.
Bitcoin’s price action contributed to the positive sentiment. The leading cryptocurrency closed Friday near $80,882 following a nearly 6% rally, having briefly exceeded $81,000 during intraday trading.
U.S. financial regulators have simultaneously been exploring updated frameworks for products that merge conventional securities with blockchain-based infrastructure. On September 17, the SEC unveiled a five-year exemptive framework addressing specific tokenized-stock trading configurations.
Coinbase’s single-stock perpetual futures remain unavailable to U.S. market participants. CFTC records from September 18 continue to indicate Coinbase’s proposed contracts are awaiting regulatory clearance.
