New York Stock Exchange Runs Year-Long Trial of Avalanche Blockchain Technology
Key Takeaways
- Avalanche blockchain technology has undergone approximately 12 months of evaluation by the New York Stock Exchange, as revealed by Ava Labs President Charley Cooper.
- Intercontinental Exchange, NYSE’s parent company, has been examining whether Avalanche meets requirements for its proposed tokenized securities infrastructure.
- No official announcement has been made by NYSE or ICE confirming Avalanche as the chosen blockchain solution.
- The exchange aims to enable blockchain-based trading and settlement for tokenized American stocks and exchange-traded funds, pending regulatory clearance.
- tZERO has been designated as a design partner working alongside ICE on the tokenized securities infrastructure development.
The New York Stock Exchange has been conducting extensive trials of Avalanche blockchain infrastructure for roughly 12 months as part of its initiative to create a platform for tokenized American equities and exchange-traded funds.
This information came to light when Ava Labs President Charley Cooper made the disclosure at Thursday’s Avalanche Summit held in New York.
According to Cooper, the stock exchange has been investigating how Avalanche’s technological framework could integrate with NYSE’s current operational systems.
The evaluation process extended well beyond mere technical assessments. Cooper revealed that NYSE posed questions to Ava Labs regarding the company’s business structure and its comprehension of the commercial demands facing a leading exchange.
Avalanche Among Blockchain Candidates for NYSE Tokenization Initiative
Cooper characterized the partnership between Ava Labs and Intercontinental Exchange, the NYSE’s parent corporation, as substantial. However, he stopped short of declaring that Avalanche had secured the contract for the tokenization initiative.
Michael Blaugrund, ICE’s Head of Strategic Initiatives, also addressed this collaboration during the Avalanche Summit presentation.
Blaugrund indicated that ICE maintained active engagement with the Avalanche development team throughout its evaluation of various blockchain solutions. He noted that Avalanche satisfied numerous criteria that ICE had established for assessment.
The exchange first unveiled its tokenized securities strategy in January. NYSE announced development of infrastructure enabling trading and blockchain-based settlement for American equities and ETFs.
Regulatory authorization remains necessary before the proposed system can launch.
NYSE intends to integrate its current Pillar matching engine with blockchain-powered systems that would manage post-trade settlement processes.
The infrastructure under development is being built to accommodate multiple blockchain networks for settlement and custody operations. This multi-chain approach indicates Avalanche represents one option under consideration rather than a finalized selection.
Last August, ICE revealed a distinct partnership with tZERO. This firm was designated as a design partner contributing to the infrastructure that will underpin the NYSE-affiliated tokenized securities marketplace.
ICE has maintained silence regarding which specific blockchain network or networks will ultimately power the platform.
Blockchain Innovation Enters Traditional Securities Infrastructure
Tokenization enables conventional financial assets like corporate equities to be represented and exchanged through blockchain-based infrastructure.
The NYSE’s approach would implement this technology for American stocks and ETFs while maintaining its proven trading engine as the system’s core component.
Cooper also explored the potential for extended trading hours with tokenized securities. He suggested that certain platforms might introduce 24-hour trading during weekdays within the coming year.
He acknowledged uncertainty about whether initial adopters of round-the-clock trading would include premier exchanges like NYSE, the London Stock Exchange, or CME.
Cooper referenced an SEC innovation exemption announced Thursday, which he indicated allows specific types of blockchain-based trading activities involving tokenized equities.
Currently, ICE continues its assessment of blockchain technology providers while collaborating with tZERO on the comprehensive platform architecture. Although Avalanche has completed a year-long testing period, NYSE has not issued confirmation that the network will power its tokenized securities infrastructure.
