European Stock Markets Open Lower Following Previous Day's Gains
European stock markets opened modestly lower on Friday, September 18, 2026, as investors took a breather after a strong rebound the previous day. The Eurostoxx index fell by 0.2%, while major indices such as Germany's DAX, France's CAC 40, and Spain's IBEX each dropped by 0.4%. The UK's FTSE 100 and Italy's FTSE MIB also saw declines of 0.3%.
The slight downturn appears to be a result of profit-taking rather than a shift towards risk aversion. On Thursday, European stocks had rallied significantly, buoyed by falling oil prices and easing bond yields, which helped markets adjust to the U.S. Federal Reserve's recent interest rate hike.
In other developments, the Bank of Japan raised its policy rate by 25 basis points to 1.25%, marking the highest level in 31 years. This decision, which was passed with a 7-2 vote, has not triggered a broader risk-off sentiment in the markets. Meanwhile, Brent crude oil prices fell nearly 2% to $102.80, continuing a three-day decline as concerns over potential disruptions to Saudi supply eased. Overall, the market sentiment remains cautious but constructive, with U.S. stock futures showing positive movement.
