Bank of Japan Board Member Signals Likely Rate Hike Amid Inflation Concerns

Kazuyuki Masu, a board member of the Bank of Japan (BOJ), indicated that the central bank is likely to continue raising interest rates as underlying inflation approaches the 2% target. His comments come ahead of the BOJ's policy meeting scheduled for September 17 and 18, where market expectations are leaning towards a further rate increase. Masu, who joined the BOJ board in July 2025, is recognized as one of the more hawkish members and has previously advocated for early rate hikes if economic conditions allow.

Masu highlighted that while current inflation remains below 2%, it is nearing that threshold, driven by factors such as rising oil prices and a weak yen. He noted that the impact of the weak yen on inflation is more pronounced than in the past, and he expressed concerns about rising producer prices, which have recently spiked by 7%. These pressures could lead to increased consumer prices, particularly in the food sector, which Masu expects to see a reacceleration in.

The BOJ board member emphasized the importance of monitoring financial, price, and job conditions closely as the central bank approaches its estimated neutral interest rate range. He warned that if inflation accelerates, the BOJ may need to implement rate hikes more rapidly than anticipated. Masu's remarks underscore the BOJ's shift away from a prolonged period of deflation and its commitment to normalizing monetary policy in response to evolving economic conditions.
