Bitwise Terminates Dogecoin (DOGE) ETF After Brief 10-Month Run
Key Takeaways
- Bitwise Investment Advisors is terminating its Dogecoin ETF (BWOW), with trading ceasing on October 14, 2026
- Investors will receive cash distributions calculated from the October 21 net asset value, with payouts arriving October 22
- Following the closure announcement, DOGE declined approximately 2.6%, settling around $0.084 on September 11
- The fund attracted merely $318,000 in net inflows throughout August, significantly trailing Bitcoin and Ethereum investment products
- Cryptocurrency markets faced additional headwinds from climbing bond yields on the announcement date
On September 10, Bitwise Investment Advisors revealed plans to terminate and liquidate its Dogecoin-focused exchange-traded fund, trading under the symbol BWOW, just shy of its first anniversary following its November 26, 2025 debut.
Trading operations for the fund will cease before NYSE Arca’s opening bell on October 15. Shareholders looking to exit their positions can execute sales until the market closes on October 14. Share creation will be permanently suspended after this cutoff date.
The firm will liquidate BWOW’s entire Dogecoin portfolio into U.S. dollars on October 14. Final net asset value calculations will occur on October 21, with proceeds transferred directly to shareholders’ brokerage accounts the following day, October 22.
In its official statement, Bitwise explained the decision as part of efforts to “optimize its product range to meet evolving investor needs.” The company notably avoided mentioning trading activity or asset levels as motivating factors for the shutdown.
Technical analyst Ali Charts identified a possible near-term recovery pattern for DOGE coinciding with the announcement. The analyst highlighted that the TD Sequential indicator produced a buy signal on the 4-hour timeframe, referencing three previous instances where comparable signals preceded price rallies of 6.96%, 2.71%, and 11.25%.
Weak Market Interest Seals Fund’s Fate
Market activity surrounding BWOW revealed lackluster demand virtually from inception. While the product saw approximately $3 million in trading volume during its debut week, activity never approached those levels again.
Collectively, U.S.-based Dogecoin ETF offerings managed just $318,000 in net capital inflows throughout August. By contrast, Hyperliquid-related ETFs amassed sufficient activity to register $2.1 billion in cumulative trading volume since their introduction, while Zcash and Chainlink products achieved approximately $1.5 billion and $680 million in volume respectively.
Aggregate trading volume for all Dogecoin ETFs totaled around $300 million since their collective launch. This metric reflects share transactions rather than net capital contributions.
DOGE Price Movement
On September 11, DOGE changed hands near the $0.084 level, representing a roughly 2.6% decrease from the prior trading session. While the price slide followed Bitwise’s announcement, available market data doesn’t establish a definitive causal relationship between the ETF termination and the price movement.

Treasury yields simultaneously climbed that same day, partially influenced by producer price index data meeting economist expectations. Elevated yield environments typically diminish investor enthusiasm for speculative assets including cryptocurrencies.
Bitwise continues managing approximately $9 billion in client capital distributed across more than 70 investment vehicles, including exchange-traded products tracking Bitcoin, Ether, Solana, XRP, and additional digital assets. The BWOW closure leaves these other products unaffected.
Shareholders maintaining BWOW positions through the liquidation process should recognize that final cash distributions may trigger taxable consequences, contingent upon their initial purchase price, duration of ownership, and the account classification used for holding the investment.
