Blackstone's Jon Gray Highlights India as Leading Private Equity Market

Blackstone President Jon Gray has identified India as the private equity firm's best-performing market globally, marking a significant turnaround from its initial struggles in the country. In an interview with Bloomberg Television's Wall Street Week, Gray noted that India is approaching a tipping point for accelerated growth, driven by a shift in Blackstone's strategy to focus on majority or equal-control stakes in sectors such as information technology services, commercial real estate, and domestic manufacturing.

India's gross domestic product (GDP) has surged to approximately $3.7 trillion, nearly five times its level in 2005, and the country has advanced from the 14th to the 4th largest economy in the world, surpassing Germany, the United Kingdom, and France. The World Bank projects a growth rate of 7.6% for fiscal 2026, supported by a population of 1.47 billion, which is now the largest globally following India's overtaking of China in 2023.

Despite the positive outlook, Gray cautioned about potential risks, including ongoing tariff disagreements between the United States and India and rising energy costs linked to the conflict in Iran. Former Infosys CFO Mohandas Pai highlighted India's substantial talent pool, with around 11 million graduates annually, including a significant number of engineers, suggesting a strong foundation for future growth. Investors will be closely monitoring whether these challenges impact the growth trajectory that Gray anticipates for India.
