Trump Reverses Decision on Houthi Airstrikes Following Saudi Crown Prince Call

President Donald Trump has made two reversals regarding potential airstrikes against the Houthi movement in Yemen, following discussions with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Initially, Trump indicated he did not support military action but later instructed the Pentagon to prepare for strikes after a conversation with the crown prince. However, by midday on Sunday, administration officials announced that there would be no airstrikes for the time being.

The situation has escalated as the Houthis have advanced toward the Bab al-Mandab Strait, a critical maritime chokepoint, and fired a ballistic missile at Riyadh, which was intercepted by Saudi forces. Despite pressure from Riyadh for direct U.S. military action, U.S. officials have stated that the administration's focus remains on Iran and the Strait of Hormuz, with approximately 200 U.S. personnel in Saudi Arabia serving in non-combat roles.

Current and former U.S. officials have expressed skepticism that a limited bombing campaign would compel the Houthis to negotiate, noting that the group has rebuilt its military capabilities since a ceasefire last year and is utilizing artificial intelligence to enhance its missile technology. Concerns have also been raised that renewed strikes could provoke the Houthis to target U.S. ships, further threatening oil and gas transit through the Bab al-Mandab Strait.
