Blue Origin, Firefly and L3Harris Secure NASA’s $100M Spacecraft Processing Deal
Key Takeaways
- NASA has chosen Blue Origin, Firefly Aerospace, L3Harris Technologies, and All Points Logistics for spacecraft processing services under a $100M contract
- The $100 million represents a shared maximum ceiling across all four vendors, not individual guaranteed payments
- Contract work orders will be issued through February 1, 2033
- SpaceX shares declined approximately 3% in premarket trading Tuesday, stalling near the $150 price level
- The wider space sector experienced losses, with Firefly, Rocket Lab, and Voyager Technologies each falling over 3%
NASA announced spacecraft processing contracts for four companies on Tuesday as the space industry sector experienced widespread declines.
The space agency has tapped Blue Origin, Firefly Aerospace, L3Harris Technologies, and All Points Logistics for its Spacecraft Processing Operations Contract. The total contract ceiling stands at $100 million across all four winners.
These contracts encompass pre-launch processing activities for spacecraft and rocket components ahead of pad delivery. Work scope includes site-level planning, mission scheduling, and comprehensive safety protocols.
Breaking Down the Contract Structure
The $100 million total does not represent guaranteed payments distributed among the four winning companies. Instead, it serves as the cumulative maximum for an indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity agreement, under which NASA will issue task orders based on operational requirements.
NASA has not released details regarding individual contract values or which specific missions will involve each contractor.
Work orders under this contract may be issued until February 1, 2033. Oversight will come from NASA’s Launch Services Program, headquartered at Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
For Firefly Aerospace, this contract strengthens an ongoing partnership with NASA. The company was recently awarded a separate $144 million contract under the Commercial Lunar Payload Services program for an additional Blue Ghost moon mission, marking its sixth lunar mission under contract.
L3Harris maintains existing supply relationships with NASA for spacecraft systems, communications equipment, and payload technology. Both Blue Origin and All Points Logistics operate as privately held entities.
SpaceX Stock Stalls at $150 Threshold
SpaceX stock retreated roughly 3% during premarket hours on Tuesday, dropping under the $143 mark.
The prior session saw SpaceX reach an intraday peak of $149.79, approaching the $150 price point where shares initially debuted. This level appears to be acting as technical resistance, coinciding with the opening price from its June 12 public offering.
While SpaceX shares have climbed back above the $135 IPO listing price, they remain significantly below the June 16 all-time high of $225.64. The stock has posted positive returns for five straight weeks in its 11th week of public trading.
SpaceX has a Falcon 9 mission scheduled for Tuesday evening from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. The flight will deploy 24 Starlink satellites to low-Earth orbit, with launch targeted for approximately 8:45 p.m. Pacific Time.
The launch follows an active weekend for SpaceX, which executed two Falcon 9 missions separated by just 40 minutes from launch facilities in both Florida and California.
Broader space equities also experienced declines Tuesday. Rocket Lab shares dropped more than 3%. Voyager Technologies fell 5%. Planet Labs, Intuitive Machines, and AST SpaceMobile each posted losses exceeding 3%.
L3Harris stock moved marginally higher, attempting to recover from Monday’s 4.6% decline. That drop came after the company announced a CEO replacement following a conduct-related investigation.
