Boston Scientific (BSX) Stock Slides as Cyberattack Derails Financial Outlook
Key Takeaways
- Shares of Boston Scientific declined 2.3% during premarket hours following the company’s announcement that it will miss previously issued financial targets for Q3 and fiscal 2026.
- The revised outlook stems from ongoing disruptions caused by a cybersecurity breach first identified on August 25.
- Earlier projections called for annual revenue expansion between 5.5% and 6.5%, with adjusted earnings per share ranging from $3.28 to $3.32.
- Year-to-date, BSX shares have plummeted 50%, with a 55% decline over the trailing twelve months, trading significantly below the 52-week peak of $109.50.
- While TD Cowen maintained its Buy recommendation with a $56 target, the endorsement was eclipsed by the formal earnings revision.
Shares of Boston Scientific (BSX) fell 2.3% to $46.68 during Tuesday’s premarket session after the medical device manufacturer issued a formal notice that it will probably fall short of its revenue and profit targets for the third quarter and the entirety of 2026.
Boston Scientific Corporation, BSX
The revised guidance stems from the cybersecurity incident the firm revealed on August 25. In Tuesday’s SEC filing, BSX stated it is “unlikely to meet” its projected ranges for both net revenue growth and adjusted earnings per share during Q3 and for the full year.
This represents a more definitive position compared to the company’s earlier communications, which indicated that the financial ramifications of the security breach remained under assessment.
Boston Scientific had outlined expectations at the close of July for annual sales expansion of 5.5% to 6.5%, alongside adjusted earnings per share between $3.28 and $3.32. Third-quarter projections included revenue growth of 3% to 5% and adjusted EPS spanning 80 to 82 cents.
Market analysts had anticipated full-year adjusted earnings of $3.30 per share on revenues totaling $21.35 billion, with third-quarter consensus estimates calling for 81 cents per share and $5.26 billion in sales, based on FactSet data.
The stock has endured significant headwinds throughout the year, independent of this recent development. BSX has tumbled 50% since January and declined 55% during the past year. Current trading levels sit well beneath the 52-week high of $109.50, hovering nearer to the 52-week low of $42.20.
Wall Street Response
The guidance retraction compounds pressure on a stock that had already faced increasing skepticism. Argus Research previously moved BSX to a Hold stance from Buy, highlighting concerns regarding expansion momentum for the Watchman product line and the domestic electrophysiology business segment.
Following second-quarter results and the initial cyberattack revelation, Baird, JPMorgan, and Bank of America each reduced their price objectives for the stock.
TD Cowen stood as the solitary optimistic voice, maintaining its Buy recommendation alongside a $56 price objective. The firm highlighted that by September 5, Boston Scientific’s primary distribution facilities were handling and dispatching products at normal or elevated capacity levels. Despite this encouraging operational update, it failed to offset Tuesday’s official earnings warning.
Looking Ahead
Boston Scientific reported no indications of continued unauthorized system access, although the forensic investigation remains underway.
The organization noted it anticipates recouping a portion of the foregone revenue as operational capabilities normalize, pending customer orders are completed, and inventory backlogs diminish.
The complete financial toll from the security incident remains undetermined. Boston Scientific intends to provide comprehensive details regarding its operational status and financial projections, including the cyberattack’s full impact, during its third-quarter earnings conference call scheduled for October 28.
Fellow medical technology companies Abbott and Medtronic have similarly confronted cybersecurity challenges in 2026, contributing to sustained caution across the broader sector.
